A bladder infection is a painful and irritating inconvenience. The frequent need to take bathroom breaks during your day when you are hard at work trying to finish a task can be quite annoying. This is especially true for those of you who have a lot of travel in your work schedule or who are unable to take a bathroom break anytime they wish.
Bladder infections are generally bacterial infections of the bladder. Medically this condition is referred to as cystitis. It is basically an inflammation of the bladder and a lot of people often confuse the symptoms as being those of a urinary tract infection.
The most common complaints of people with bladder infections are that they feel the urge to urinate more frequently. Most of the time when they go to the bathroom they can only pass a very small amount of urine even though the urge was intense. Sometimes the act of urination does not alleviate the urge to urinate. There are complaints of painful burning sensations when the person empties their bladder. Often times the urine will appear cloudy and have a foul odor. Some people also complain of a pressure type pain in their lower abdomen.
When you find yourself experiencing any of the above mentioned painful symptoms you should see your health care provider for an accurate diagnosis of a bladder infection. They will test your urine to determine the presence of a bladder infection and to determine the exact cause of the infection. While most of these infections are caused by bacteria there are some other causes and the treatment will depend largely on the cause of the infection.
Once the doctor has determined the culprit that is creating a bladder infection in you they will prescribe antibiotics for you to take orally. The type of antibiotic, the strength of the medication, and the length of time you will be required to take the medication will all depend on the cause.
Drink Plenty of Fluids
You can also increase the amounts of fluid you are drinking to help flush out your bladder. You want to decrease your consumption of caffeinated drinks and drinks that contain alcohol. These substances can actually irritate your bladder. You want to drink more water and cranberry juice. Cranberry juice contains hippuric acid that helps to stop bacteria from being able to adhere to your bladder. You need to drink 100% cranberry juice and not a cranberry cocktail to get all the possible benefits. You can make the juice more palatable by diluting it with water or you can even buy capsules that contain all the benefits without the tart juice.
Good personal hygiene can also help to stop the bladder infections. You want to keep your anal and vaginal regions cleansed and as free from bacteria as possible. Remind young girls that you wipe front to back and never back to front.
Recurring Bladder Infections
Recurring bladder infections can cause more serious complications. If you are experiencing recurring infections in your bladder be sure and see your health care provider to determine how to prevent these infections.
A boil is actually an infected hair follicle on the body. The hair follicle is invaded by bacteria that sets up an infection and causes the boil to occur. The boil may remind you of a pimple in its very earliest stages because it will begin as a reddened and painful bump on the skin. A boil is generally much larger than a pimple and it is definitely a lot more painful than a pimple.
The duration of a boil is generally two weeks or less and they generally come to a head and rupture on their own when left alone. Sometimes the boil will be so deep in your skin that it cannot come to the surface to drain without assistance and this is when you need to see a doctor so you can have the boil lanced and removed.
Boils are commonly caused by what we call a Staph infection. This bacteria is present in the human nasal passages, in our throats, and even on our skin. The bacteria is generally present but does not cause us any problems. It can however invade our bodies and create serious conditions for us. Staph is a contagious bacteria so boils are contagious.
Soothe Boils with Hot Compresses
Hot water serves the purpose of helping to reduce some of the pain of the boil but it also helps the boil to come to the surface so that it can rupture. A boil cannot heal until the infection inside it is drained so the quicker a boil reaches the surfaces and ruptures the quicker it will go away.
After the boil has ruptured wash the area thoroughly with an antibacterial soap and apply a bandage to stop the drainage from coming in contact with other areas of your skin. For a couple of days you can continue your applications of hot compresses to make certain all of the infection has been removed.
Never Squeeze a Boil
Whenever you have something like a boil it is common for people to attempt to grasp them between their fingers and force them to rupture. This is understandable because they want relief from the pain but it can actually cause you more problems. Whenever you apply pressure to the tender swollen skin around the boil you can cause damage to the layers beneath the surface. This can actually allow the infection to spread more.
Instead of forcing the boil to rupture you should apply hot compresses and allow the boil to rise to the surface. It will get a large pustule on the top of it as the infection draws nearer to the surface and when the infection has drawn close enough to the top to create adequate pressure the boil will rupture at the slightest touch.
If you do squeeze these types of infected bumps you can cause scarring of the skin that will be permanent. Often these scars will appear like badly bruised places at first and the discoloration will generally fade some over time.
Some people believe that bunions are caused by the wearing of shoes that are too tight. This may be one of the agents that help to cause the deformity of the metatarsophangeal joint. The metatarsophangeal joint supports the majority of the weight of your body when you are doing things like walking, standing, and running. This of course is your big toe that we are speaking of and the big toe gets a lot of abuse from us in the activities we do and in the shoes we choose to wear. When the tissue that surrounds the joint of the big toe or the bone around this joint shifts the result can be your big toe shifting to a position more inward on your foot, closer to the position of the second toe.
When this occurs it causes the tissue to become swollen and very tender to the touch. After a period of time a hardened lump will appear in the area on the side of your foot. This hardened lump or bunion can be quite painful and will more than likely develop arthritis after a length of time.
The only way to truly get rid of bunions is to have foot surgery performed by a podiatrist to correct the deformity. You can address the symptoms of the condition and alleviate some of the pain associated with bunions.
This sounds slightly amusing but since the problem is caused by your big toe moving inward towards your second toe you can perform foot exercises to strengthen your big toes and decrease the amount of movement you experience.
In order to adequately exercise this portion of your body you will need to move the toe in every possible position it can be moved in and hold it in that position until you count to ten. Repeat the exercises daily to help keep the joint at the base of your toe flexible and to help keep the toe from moving toward the second toe.
Proper Footwear at all Times
While footwear is not the only cause of bunions it is primarily the main cause of this condition. Whenever you wear shoes that squeeze your toes together for long periods of time you are creating the condition that causes the bunions. Women have far more instances of bunions than men do because women wear uncomfortable shoes that press their toes together instead of allowing them room to move.
You may also cause your feet to have bunions if you are buying shoes that are simply the wrong width. If you get a painfully sore pressure point from your shoe applying pressure to your foot then you need to buy wider shoes.
You can purchase splints to be worn while you are in bed that will help to control the amount of movement your big toe has. These splints apply a gentle pressure holding your toe in the correct position rather than allowing it to be pushed to the side.
You can take over the counter pain relievers that contain Ibuprofen to help alleviate some of the pain associated with bunions. You should also talk to a podiatrist about the possibility of removing your bunions surgically.
Bursitis is a painful joint condition that is caused when the bursa that allows the muscles of your body to move over the joints of your body smoothly become stressed and inflamed. Under normal conditions this bursa provides a protective barrier to your muscles from the sharp and hard bones of your joints. Whenever the small sacks of fluid known as bursa become inflamed then the muscles cannot glide smoothly and this causes extreme pain whenever the affected joint is used.
Generally you suffer from the condition of Bursitis when you overuse one of your joints and cause the bursa to become inflamed. This overuse is commonly see in shoulders, knees, and elbows. A lot of our daily tasks require us to get on our knees and we tend to lean on our elbows frequently. Both of these things can cause Bursitis. Traumatic injury to a joint can also cause the condition. Of course activities like raking, tennis, swimming, skiing, and fishing all involve the shoulder muscle and can all result in Bursitis symptoms.
Generally Bursitis is no real cause for concern it is just an annoying condition that you must deal with until it heals. There are some things you can do to help the healing process go a little faster and to reduce the amount of pain you have during the ordeal.
Cold compresses or ice packs placed on the joint that is experiencing the Bursitis will help to reduce the swelling and will thus help to alleviate some of the pain. Ice should never be applied directly to human skin without a towel or protective barrier. A plastic freezer or storage bag does not count as a protective barrier. Place a towel or some other dry cloth between your skin and the ice pack.
Anti inflammatory Drugs
Over the counter medications like Ibuprofen and Naproxen Sodium will provide you with some pain relief. Both of these pain relievers help with the swelling that can occur around joints and they are both readily available at most stores.
You should always take these medications as prescribed and never mix medications or mix medications with alcohol. There can be serious and even deadly side effects when you combine alcohol and pain relievers of any type.
Respiratory failure, elevated heart rate and blood pressure are just some of the dangerous side effects of mixing alcohol and other drugs.
Once the swelling has been alleviated you may use a heating pad or hot water bottle to apply heat to soothe the discomfort in the joint. Do not apply heat while the swelling is still present because heat will make the joint swell even more. You also want to use heat applications with caution. If you apply heat directly to your skin you can cause a burn. Use a cloth barrier between the heat source and your tender skin to prevent this from happening.
The best way you can treat Bursitis is to prevent the condition from occurring. Whenever you are engaging in an activity that can apply some stress to your joints make sure and do some warm up movements first. You also want to make sure that you do not over use any joint. Nothing is worth the weeks of pain you might suffer from the overuse of your joints
The bones that form your wrist and hands are called the carpal bones. A canal adequately separates the sheath of tendons that creates movement in your hands from these carpal bones. This canal is called the carpal tunnel. Nine different tendons move in and out of this canal and the median nerve also moves in and out of this canal.
Your problem with carpal tunnel syndrome happens when something causes the canal to swell or otherwise become restricted. Sometimes the tendons can get places on them that will cause them to not move through the canal with the ease that they should. Whenever something causes the movement through the carpal tunnel to be restricted then there is pain and a decreased amount of mobility in the wrist.
This condition is frequently experienced by people who do office jobs that require them to do a large amount of typing or any task that applies pressure to the hands and the wrist. Obesity and smoking can also both play a key role in the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.
In order to stop the carpal tunnel syndrome from occurring or from becoming worse you should take frequent breaks when you are doing repetitive tasks with your wrists and hands. You will benefit a great deal if you take a break at least once an hour for a two minute time period when you allow your hands to stretch and be released of the tense position they have been in.
Apply Cold Compresses for the Pain
Whenever your wrist is being painful you can relax and apply cold compresses to help alleviate the pain and the swelling associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. You can also take over the counter pain medications that are designed to help reduce swelling. These medications can bring a great deal of relief but carefully follow the manufacturer’s prescribed doses to avoid complications from taking too many of this type of medication.
You can purchase computer keyboards and a mouse for the computer that has an ergonomic design. The ergonomic designed components are supposed to position your hands in such a manner that you can relieve some of the pressure and stress you are placing on the carpal tunnel. Many employers will help you to purchase the necessary items to alleviate this condition.
For many people the only solution to the discomfort they are feeling from carpal tunnel syndrome is surgical correction. Surgeons can correct the pressure that is being placed on the median nerve and it can also help to alleviate the syndrome completely.
There are actually two different surgeries that can be done to help people with this condition. One surgery requires a much larger incision than the other surgery does. Only the surgeon in charge of your operation can determine which of these surgeries will best benefit you. The average person makes a full recovery after surgery. Or ninety percent of the people that have had the surgery report no problems afterward.
Eczema is a condition of the skin that presents itself with dryness, itching, flaking areas, and areas of redness, blistering of the skin, and occasionally bleeding. Generally the majority of people that have the condition known as Eczema complain of the itching and the reddened areas of dry skin. The condition can occur on any portion of your body including your face and your hands. When it does happen to present itself on your face or hands it can be impossible to hide and this often causes a lot of people anxiety about their general appearance.
There are a lot of different treatments for the condition of Eczema and most people just have to discover through trial and error which of these treatments effectively helps them get over the condition or prevents the condition from occurring again.
One thing you should do if you suffer from Eczema is to reduce the amount of soaps and detergents your skin comes in contact with. These soaps and detergents all contain harmful chemicals that can be very harsh on skin. As often as you can cleanse your skin with pure water and do not use soaps and detergents unless you absolutely have to.
You need to use a good skin moisturizer if you suffer from Eczema. Dry skin is one factor that increases the discomfort and the appearance of the condition. When you use soaps to cleanse your skin use gentle soaps or body washes that contain moisturizers. You also want to apply moisturizers to your skin so that you prevent dry skin from happening. Immediately after you have bathed you should apply emollient creams that will help to lock the moisture into your skin.
Antihistamines for the Itching
When your skin is itching because of Eczema the best thing you can do is take antihistamines to stop the itch. Anti inflammation creams and ointments can also help to stop the itch of this skin condition. Try not to scratch or rub at your skin as these actions serve to make the matter worse not better.
If you have severe itching associated with your eczema you can talk to your doctor about hydrocortisone creams that can help to alleviate the itch. Your doctor will prescribe the correct doseage of these creams for your condition. If the cream you have is not working tell the doctor so they can give you a stronger dose.
Precautions when bathing
Bathing your skin in water is necessary to provide hydration for your skin but there are a few things you should remember about bathing.
- Tub baths are better than long showers
- The water temperature should be lukewarm not too hot and not too cold
- Use the mildest soaps possible when you have to apply soap
- Do not use heavily perfumed products
- Do not take bubble baths
- Add bath oils that have emollients in them to your water
- After your bath pat your skin with a towel never rub the towel over your skin
Man is not alone in his problems with not being able to process all of the uric acid in their bodies. We share this painful condition with the guinea pig. No other creatures in the world are affected by the painful condition known as gout.
Gout is caused when the uric acid builds up into crystals in the body’s tissues. Generally this condition is centralized around the joints and tendons of the body. It causes stiffness in the joints, and inflammation around these joints, and some people describe the pain caused by gout as being excruciating. The joints in a person’s feet and ankles are the usually ones attacked by gout conditions.
Gout will generally correct itself in a few days time. That does not mean that the condition will not be back to make you suffer at a later date though. There are some things that you can do to help your body recover from the symptoms of gout.
An increase in the fluids you take into your body every day can help you excrete the uric acid from your tissues. Of course water is the number one recommended drink for purposes like these but there are other fluids that can also help you. Drink vegetable juice, and herbal teas, you can even drink milk. You need the extra fluid so drink as much as you can.
Avoid Foods Rich in Purine
Purines are found in human tissues and they are found in some of the foods that we ingest as well. Our bodies convert Purine into uric acid that when it builds up in our body is the cause of gout. So by reducing your intake of Purine rich foods you will reduce your amount of uric acid and thus reduce the painful condition of gout.
You will find purines in all protein rich foods but meats like the organs contain a much higher concentration of purines than other meats. Sardines that are packed in oil have a high concentration as well. You will also find a high concentration of purines in yeast products and in legumes. Whenever you are having a painful flare up of gout it is recommended that you watch your diet very closely in order to allow you to reduce your uric acid.
Avoid or Eliminate the Consumption of Alcohol
In order for your body to remove alcohol from your system it has to convert the alcohol into lactic acid. When the body has an increased amount of lactic acid to eliminate it reduces the amount of uric acid it is eliminating. Then you get an excessive build up of uric acid and this leads to the painful symptoms of gout.
Bing Cherries are good for Gout Sufferers
Bing cherries have been scientifically proven to help lower the amount of uric acid in the body. After eating only forty five Bing cherries and waiting five hours the uric acid levels in the tests subjects were greatly reduced, so eat more cherries.
Have you ever had one of those itches that you just cannot get any relief from? It seems that the more you scratch the worse the itch gets? Or those maddening itches that seem to crawl when you start to scratch. An itch is caused by something making contact with your skin that irritates it the majority of the time. Some itches can be a result of a bug bite, while dry skin conditions can create some itches. Hair tickling your skin can cause you to itch and of course touching something that you are allergic to like poison ivy can cause you to itch. You can also itch when you ingest something that causes an allergic reaction. So the only real way to address an itch is to address the cause of the itch.
Is There a Rash
Most of the time an itch that is caused by an allergic reaction will be accompanied by a rash. The rash may at first appear as nothing more than a reddened area on the skin. Most of the time when you have a itch that is caused by an allergic reaction and accompanied by a rash you will want to take an antihistamine to relieve the itch. Over the counter antihistamines will work for most cases like this but if the rash persists, or you develop other symptoms like a fever you need to seek the advice of a doctor before continuing treatment.
Creams that contain hydrocortisone are also very good to help you relieve the itching caused by some allergic type reactions. You can buy mild tubes of these creams over the counter or your doctor can prescribe more powerful concentrations.
Bug bites can be a common source of the itches on your skin. Bugs like mosquito’s and fleas are common causes of itches on your skin. The more you scratch a mosquito bite the worse the itch will be. The only true way to stop the bite from itching is for you to not touch it. A cold compress will often alleviate the itch associated with a bug bite as well.
Many times itches are caused by things like fabrics you are coming into contact with are causing your skin to itch. Some fabrics like wool are especially bad to cause itches on skin. The only way to stop itches that are created by outside irritants like this is to stop your exposure to these irritants. If you wear something or sit on something that causes you to itch then you need to avoid coming in contact with the material again.
A bath taken is water that has had baking soda placed in it will often times soothe your skin and stop the itches. This will not always be the case but frequently it helps. Cool water baths are extremely comforting when you have several mosquito bites and oatmeal soaps will help to alleviate the itches that are caused by poison ivy.
The number one cause of itches is dry skin. You can alleviate dry skin with ointments and creams. You can also help dry skin by bathing in lukewarm water and by patting your body dry versus rubbing your body with the towel.
Pink eye or conjunctivitis is one of the most common afflictions that people suffer with in their eyes. You go to bed one night feeling fine and the next morning you cannot open your eyes because they are glued shut with the eye matter that was produced overnight. When you get the eye open it looks painfully red and irritated. Your affected eye will be very sensitive to light and will burn and itch simultaneously. It is a very unpleasant condition to have.
The condition of pink eye is actually conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is the medical term for the inner membranes of your eyelid becoming inflamed and irritated. Many things can cause this condition including bacterial infections, viral infections, being exposed to harmful chemicals that burn the eyes or being exposed to other contaminants. There is really no reason to become majorly concerned when you develop pink eye.
Some people are allergic to dust and to animal dander. In some people these irritants make them sneeze and in some people the irritants will make them develop pink eye. In order to recover from this type of pink eye you have to remove the irritants and try to avoid coming in contact with them in the future.
Viral Pink Eye
Viral pink eye requires that you see a doctor for treatment. It will eventually run its course and get better but the cause of viral pink eye can sometimes be a weakened immune system and sometimes this is a sign of a corneal infection. You need to let your eye doctor determine what is causing the problem and tell you the best method of treatment.
The eye doctor may prescribe you antibiotics that you will either take orally or that you will need to put in your eye. They can also prescribe you some soothing eye drops that will stop the painful burning and itching associated with this condition.
Please remember that viral pink eye is contagious and try not to spread the infection to others.
Chemical Pink Eye
When you have pink eye that has been caused by your eyes being exposed to a chemical substance that irritated the eyes then you need to make certain that you avoid coming into contact with that chemical again. You also need to see a doctor to make certain that the chemical did not do lasting damage to your eyes. Only a doctor can tell you this.
The doctor can prescribe you some ointment that will soothe your eyes. They will more than likely also tell you that you need to wear an eye patch or protective covering until the chemical burn has healed. You will need to be careful with your eyes after this and you will have to also see the doctor again in order to make certain your eyes have healed properly and no lasting effects have been caused by the chemicals.
If you think you have pink eye it is better for you to see a doctor and find out what caused the condition.
Your lower leg from the knee to your ankle is composed primarily of two major bones. The larger of these two bones is the tibia and the smaller bone is the fibula. Your tibia is frequently referred to as your shin bone. These two bones provide the area where the muscles that control the movements of your foot connect. These muscles are the anterior tibialis that allows you to bend your foot upward and the posterior tibialis that allows you to move your foot in a downward motion.
Excessive stress on these muscles from things like repetitive motion can create a strain on these muscles and when it does the pains from these strains are what are commonly called shin splints. These shin splints are rarely ever serious but if you are having them and they either or not getting well or they seem to be occurring frequently then you need to consider seeking the advice of a health care professional.
Elevation to Reduce the Swelling
You can try elevating your legs to reduce the swelling that is associated with shin splints. You can apply an elastic bandage to the area or a compression sleeve to help with the problem as well. If the bandage is wrapped too tightly it can cause discomfort and even a sensation of numbness in the foot.
Ibuprofen and medications that are designed to help decrease the amount of swelling associated with an injury can provide you a great deal of relief. Always take medications like these exactly as the instructions from the manufacturer indicate unless otherwise instructed by a health care professional. There will also be a suggested daily limit for the number of these medications you can consume in a day. Even over the counter medications can be overdosed and cause serious complications so follow the suggested doses on the packaging.
Cold Compresses can Reduce Swelling
While you have the foot elevated you can apply cold compresses or ice packs to help relieve the swelling. Remember that ice should never be applied directly to the skin and you want to remove the compresses every twenty to thirty minutes to avoid overexposure to the cold.
Rest the Muscles
You will not have to stay completely off of your feet until the shin splints heal but you will need to stop the activity that caused the condition in the first place. You will need to perform activities that do not aggravate the condition and you will need to remember what caused the condition when you return to your full workout regimen.
Shin splints are most commonly associated with activities like running and sometimes the proper footwear is required to stop you from suffering these painful episodes. Make certain the athletic shoes you are purchasing are designed for the type of athletic activity you are engaging in. You should get advice from a doctor concerning the exact type of support you may need if you continue to suffer from the condition even after changing your footwear.
