How to Get Rid of DigiNotar Digital Certificates from OS X

September 8, 2011 by

The age of computers has brought us a lot of great things. We get to find information on any subject at any time of day, keep up on the news anywhere in the world, build new networks of friends, and keep up with our old friends. Most of this stuff is rather boring for a hacker. Do they really care what you watch on Youtube?

There are somethings that they would like to know very much. These could be account numbers and passwords so to protect that information sites us SSL. Furthermore those sites are validated and given certificates to prove it. That is great as long as the certificates are real.

The problem

In case you have missed the news, DigiNotar was hacked last month. When this happened their servers started issuing fake digital certificates. This was made worse because even when security settings were changed, many OS X users were still finding these sites as trusted. Removing DigiNotar from the key chain did not seem to be enough. The users tried to fix the problem but many of them were missing a very important step. Without doing that one little thing it was like they had done nothing at all.

Luckily for OS X users, however, io101.org were nice enough to post a step by step guild on how to make sure the DigiNotar certificates are off your machine. By breaking the process into simple steps the users could be sure that it was done correctly. There is even a safe test you can run to make sure you have done it correctly.

The solution

The first thing you will have to do is to see if you need to do anything. To do this you can simple click here. This link is a HTTPS version of DigiNotar own site. If the certificates are still on your machine you will be allowed in. That is not good because you should be getting warning that this is site has an invalid certificate.

If that is not the case follow the steps below.

  • First you need to find your keychain access.
  • Next, search for DigiNotar

  • Once you find it you have two choices. You can simply delete it or, if you prefer, you change the security setting. Change it to “never trust”.
  • Now restart Safari.
  • Use the above link and test again.

You have now solved any DigiNotar issues. It seems most likely that the reason so many users where having a problem is they forgot on simple step, they did not restart Safari. This step has to be done to be sure that the DigiNotar certificates are not trusted. Sometimes with computers it is the little things that will get you.

It is a good rule of computing to restart a program if you have altered any part of the program itself. Sure, there are some things that can be done without this step, but it is a good idea to do it if it is something important, like security settings.

How to Get Rid of Slirsredirect

August 20, 2011 by

Hackers are always looking for new ways to steal people’s personal information. One malicious action they take is to implant slirsredirect on your computer.

The purpose of slirsredirect is to redirect your browser to an infected site. Then, all this malware on your site is downloaded and your computer is infected. The end result usually is you are more vulnerable because now stored passwords, e-mails, phone numbers, addresses, and more are stolen.

This is one reason why you should always delete your web surfing history. This is also a reason it is not recommended that you store passwords to sites on your computers. Likewise, this is a reason you should not ask Windows (or other operating system) to remember any passwords.

If you have not taken enough preventative measures-and even if you have tried to protect yourself-you may need to know how to remove slirsdirect. Some steps are shown below to help you with this process.

Instructions

1. Begin the steps to run a virus removal program. Right now we are specifically referring to the steps to run the Malicious Software Removal Tool that comes with Windows 7. Just press “R” and “Windows” at the same time. The “Run” box should appear.

2. Type “MRT” into the Run box. Of course, “MRT” is short for Malicious Software Removal Tool. After you have typed these initials into the appropriate place, just wait for the MRT tool to open. Then, you would choose which scan option you want, and a recommendation is made in the next step.

3. Start the scan. Usually the “full scan” option is recommended, and will appear after you have pressed “Next” to proceed to the can options page. Once you have clicked “full scan” the software should begin searching your computer for all kinds of mal ware, including “slirsdirect. “

4. Wait until scan is finished. Do not be surprised if this process takes an hour or two. This is not a fast mal ware removal tool. However, it often is preferred just because it is very thorough, searching through every file on your computer. (Of course the quick scans would not require as much time but then you risk not removing all harmful objects.)

5. Be more careful in the future. You should especially be cautious when attempting to visit websites of publishers you do not know. Oftentimes these as well as e-mail links and attachments are loaded with viruses. Furthermore, never give away your username and password and clear your web browsing history as often as possible. Do the same with your temporary internet files where too much information is also stored.

6. Install reliable virus protection software. The best ones will automatically detect and/or remove all kinds of malicious programs. You should, however, make sure you know that it can remove slirsdirect which is one of the most dangerous and exploitative of mal ware that is sold today.

7. Schedule automatic scans. This will help you keep your computer protected at all times. You can set the scans to be conducted in the middle of the night if you want. That way, it will not slow your computer down while you try to work.

How to Detect Backdoors in Programs

August 20, 2011 by

Backdoor Trojans are very sneaky. They could be present in any number of different types of program extensions or drivers. For example these malicious objects are often attached to .ordinary .doc, .docx, .xls, or .dll files. They can even pose themselves as files of said extensions.

The presence of these very evil computer and internet viruses can destroy even your entire computer system. Before your machine crashes completely, consider having this kind of malware detected and removed immediately.

You cannot see these Trojans with the naked eye. For this purpose, you need the right software otherwise you are not likely to be able to detect these harmful, infectious objects. You should learn how to spot backdoor Trojans before they spread throughout your entire computer.

Instructions

1. If you have Windows Defender open it. The best way to find this software is to Click on “Start” and then mouse over “All Programs” and click on Windows Defender. (This program may not be installed on all computers but it should be on most newer versions of Windows.)

2. Use the Windows software to do a complete scan. The “Full Scan” feature is your best option because it provides the best defense against all virus. Backdoor Trojans can be much easier removed using the “Full Scan” feature. This setting allows for you to take care of every aspect of your system.

3. Observe the scan while running. Watch carefully to see which areas of your hard drive (or even removable drives) specifically are infected. There should be a finished log where all these infections (if any) are recorded when the scan is finished. If there is a “virus vault” or similar place where unwanted infectious objects are stored, delete them.

4. Adjust your computer privacy levels. For instance, you might want to turn on your pop-up blockers on in case you forgot to shut them off. Likewise, it is a good idea to set your browsing privacy level to a moderate level. Erase all temporary internet files and web browsing history, too. You should do this as often as possible and you are advised not to save any passwords on your computer.

5. Install virus “watch dogs” to prevent future Trojan attacks. For instance, there is a such thing as “Resident Blacklist” which indicates a list of websites that you would not want to visit. It also helps if you receive virus alerts every time you open a link or attempt to download a file. E-mail scanners can also keep you protected from future Trojan back door attacks.

6. Check your computer for problems every time you use it. This especially applies to using the computer that has an “always on” internet connection. However, it also applies to making sure your computer is virus fee every single time you use the internet. Any trusted virus scanner or spy ware detector is perfect for this task. You could also set your scanning tasks to be conducted automatically when you are not sitting at your computer.

How to Get Rid of Linksador

August 19, 2011 by

Linksador is a malicious software that starts to spread but usually only when infiltrated. It usually affects the Windows OS systems. However, it is highly possible that any person with any operating system would be affected.

You need to learn how to get rid of this kind of virus properly. The best way to do so is by following a step-by-step process for doing so as described in the instructions to follow.

Instructions

1. Prepare to run the malware removal system of your choice. One that is recommended for this task is the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. You can access this on Windows 7 by pressing “R” and “Windows” at the same time. If you have a different malware program you prefer you can use it.

2. Type the initials of the program to run it. For instance, if you want to run the Windows Malicious Software removal tool, you would type “MRT” in the Run box. Then, press “Enter” on your computer keyboard.

3. Run a full scan when prompted. Usually this prompt will appear after the tool opens and you have pressed the program “Next” button. It may take a few to several minutes (and sometimes considerably longer) to do a full computer scan. Do not be alarmed if the scan takes longer than an hour, or even if it takes two hours.

4. After scan is complete, click “Finish.” This will purge all remains of the Linksador software and your computer should be free of malware of this type. After this virus is removed, you should be more careful in the future. This requires taking extra precautionary actions, as indicated in the next couple of steps.

5. Install a reliable virus scanning program. The one you choose should be well-known for its ability to protect you from all the latest mal ware attacks. It should be one you can update regularly for maximum protection. You should never use outdated virus scanners because they will not catch the latest and most ingenious hacking pursuits. Always use a software you can update daily.

6. Set up automatic alerts and schedule regular scans. The virus and mal ware scanning software you use should also alert you every time you are about to open or download an infected link. It also should alert you of viruses on web pages and in e-mails or in e-mail attachments. The best protection programs also provide scheduled scanning so detection can happen automatically when you are not at your computer.

7. Stop opening unknown files or unknown attachments! Whether the attachment is in an e-mail or is a download link at a publisher’s website do not open it. The only way you should is if you are absolutely (or at least almost absolutely certain) the source of the file is safe.

8. Never respond to unknown online offers. The only exception to this rule is if validity of a rather new online entity can be verified. For instance, maybe there is a way to authenticate the websites SSL certificate or you might be able to research it via the “Whois” directory.

How to Get Rid of Upd.exe

August 19, 2011 by

Upd.exe is a very dangerous Trojan horse file that must be removed immediately. Oftentimes it is distributed to your machine by way of viral downloads such as screen savers or smiley emoticons.

This file is not easy to spot once it is downloaded to your computer. It often runs under a variety of file names, masking itself very well. If at all you should take preventative steps towards the attack of these malicious “bugs.” However, you can also remove Upd.exe files them once they are present, at least most of the time.

Instructions

1. Install registry cleaners. Ideally, this should be done right when you first purchase your computer. Otherwise, it can be hard to remove infections without already causing damage to your hard drive. Popular registry cleaner brands include Eusing, Ccleaner or Comodo.

2. Install anti-virus and anti-spy ware programs. Some of the most reliable brands of such include Norton, AVG, and SpyBot. These different software also play some role in registry cleaning. SpyBot seems to be especially good for this.
3. Be careful what anti-virus or anti-spy ware software you use. You should never download an anti-virus or anti-spy ware/malware program of which you do not know the name. Otherwise, all you can do is make your computer even more vulnerable to vicious threats. Fake virus scanners are especially becoming very popular so watch out!

4. Run your registry cleaners and anti-malware programs regularly. Once a day is ideal. You may want to consider having these programs run in the background automatically during times you do not use your computer often.

5. Update your computer protection and cleaning software often. Every time you update your anti-virus or anti-malware software you are provided with more and more protection. The most reputable software brands (i.e. Norton, Ad Aware, and others) usually offer daily updates.

6. Watch what websites you go to in the future. Many times malicious Upd.exe attacks come from from lesser-known, uncertified or unverified sources. This may not always be true but still you have to be choosy what sites you visit. Also remember that just because a website is on the first page of search engine results does not mean it is the best. Many spammers and unscrupulous marketers use malicious means of getting to the top of search engines in order to scam people.

7. Download only trusty computer software. Not only do you need to make sure whatever software you download is spy ware and anti-virus free, but you also need to trust the software. If the maker has a good reputation (even if it is a lesser-known brand that reaches a specific niche) that would be a great software to use.

Never download software that comes from a source and/or is made in a way that makes you say to yourself, “something is just not right.” Trust your instincts when it comes to using certain kinds of software and say no to any suspicious offers, especially sent to you via e-mail.

8. Stop opening unwanted e-mail attachments. This will help spread of viruses and malware (i.e. Upd.exe) to your computer. Never open any attachments unless they come from a source you trust and if you are expecting to receive it.

How to Get Rid of Troj_Genrz3090

August 18, 2011 by

Troj_Genrz3090 is a virus that can affect your Windows operating system almost as soon as it is downloaded onto your computer. However, it is possible to get rid of this problem before it destroys all your programs and data.

Removing this malicious software is very easy to do. In fact, most computers nowadays have the Malicious Software Removal Tool that comes with most Windows machines.

If for some reason it is not on your machine you may be able to download it from the Microsoft website. However, this program is meant for newer version is of Windows.

If this program is on your computer it just takes a short series of steps to use for removing the viruses. Just follow the short process below and you will be on your way to cleaning up your computer of Troj_Genrz3090.

Instructions

1. Go to the “Start” menu. Then, click on “Run,” which is a command that is listed on the “Start” menu. (On Windows 7 it is not listed on the this menu. However, you can search for “run ” from the “Start” menu and the click on the icon labeled “run.” In the field titled “Open” you would enter the name of the program.)

2. Type in the initials “MRT” in the appropriate place. This is what will run the program you would use to get rid of the Trojan horse that is affecting your computer. (Of course, “MRT” is a shortened form of Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.)

3. Press “Enter” on your keyboard. You would do this right after you type in the file name (“MRT”) in the “Run” field. The tool that you need to use for cleaning your system should then open.

4. Press “Next” and begin your scan. This process only takes about five minutes. You will be alerted about the virus as it is detected and then you will have a chance to remove it when prompted.

5. Confirm deletion of the Trojan horse. Usually there is a record of scans that have been completed. In there it should also tell you if unwanted objects have been removed. If it hasn’t been removed, move on to the next step and it will be.

6. Restart your computer. If the virus still appears present on your computer you should restart it. After your computer reboots the virus that was there should not appear to be on your system any more. To make sure you can open the scan history (records) of the MRT program.

7. Take addition protective actions. For instance, you can find a reliable virus scanning tool to use for automatic detection of any unwanted spy ware, malware, viruses, and so on. Most of today’s popular and reliable software also provide immediate alerts if you are about to click on a website or e-mail link or are about to download a file or attachment. This is the best way to prevent any damage to your system.

8. Never respond to suspicious alerts, messages, etc. This is another preventative action you can take once you are through using the Windows MRT software. For instance, if you are presented an alert that you have a virus but it is not from a source you recognize beware.

It could be a fake alert. Furthermore, never click on any links in e-mails and certainly do not enter user names or passwords via an e-mail link. Instead, copy and past the link into your web browser to see where it goes.

How to Get Rid of eapp32hst.dlll

August 18, 2011 by

Eapp32hst.dll is one of the most dangerous Trojan viruses. When this back door malware hits your computer it can spread into your e-mail, peer networks, and work files.

If you have noticed this very destructive virus on your machine beware. You should find a way to get rid of it as soon as possible. Otherwise, it could mean eventual computer crash and possible loss of data, even if you do back up your computer files.

Just follow the steps you see below, which may be slightly different for different machines. However, the basic process for removing this very dangerous kind of back door virus is shown below.

Instructions

  1. Initialize the harmful virus removal start-up process. First click “start” and then type “taskmgr” in the search box, and then wait for the Windows Task Manager to load. Once the Task Manager screen is up, you would then proceed to the next step.
  2.  Type in the appropriate commands. Just click on the “processes” tab and select “eapp32hst.dll.” Then, click on “End Process” and when you are done just exit the Task Manager.
  3. Remove the files. First click “Start” and then type “regedit” in the search box. Then press “Enter,” click on “edit,” and then click “find.” After that type in “eapp32hst.dll” in the search box and click on “find next.”
  4. Confirm deletion of files. Then, right click the entries that appear and click “delete” and then confirm the deletion and exit the Registry Editor. Before you do this however, you could do the next step (double check deletion with software).
  5. Double check the file is deleted. If there is a vault where all unwanted registry items are stored you may want to look there to see if it is deleted. Usually this is made easier to do when you use a program such as SpyBot Search and Destroy, Norton Anti-Virus, AVG, or other malware scanning software.
  6. Make sure you use a reputable virus scanner. This will help prevent your computer from being destroyed by malicious hacking and viral attacks. Only use the virus scanners that you know are reliable and trustworthy. Otherwise, you could open yourself up to a very unscrupulous attack by a fake Anti-virus or anti-spy ware program. Many people are fooled but you do not have to be one of them.
  7. Protect your computer from future attacks. Aside from using the right kind of virus scanner, you can use firewalls to protect your computer. You are advised to set your privacy levels as high as you can while still being able to use your internet browser. For instance, if a website does not require cookies for you to use it, then do not allow it.
  8. Clear out your temporary internet files regularly. This may not prevent you from becoming attacked by some of the worst viruses. However, it can lessen the chance that your computer will be exposed to them. It also can prevent hackers from gaining access to passwords and user names that could be still hidden there.

How to Get Rid of System Tool 2011

August 17, 2011 by

System Tool 2011 is one of those very legitimate-sounding software that really is very malicious. It is what is known as a “rogue anti-virus” program.

A rogue anti-virus program is the one that is most characterized by presenting you with false computer alerts. For instance, you might receive a notice that you have viruses on your computer, whether you do or not.

The main reason for this is to trick you into buying a software that claims to remove viruses. However, it may do just the opposite. It might actually infect your entire computer and make you vulnerable to hacking and identity theft.

You need to take prompt action against rogue anti-virus software and fake alerts. These are among the most deceptive of all attempts to spread malware today.

Therefore, do whatever you can to learn more about how you can protect yourself and get rid of this kind of treat. Keep in mind not to get discouraged because this is one of the most difficult programs to remove. However, it is not impossible to wipe it off your computer.

Instructions

1. Restart your computer, if you are able. Rogue viruses spread very quickly even if you have not responded by clicking on any prompts. Usually when this kind of computer attacks your computer you cannot even access the “Start” menu because it may be missing or frozen. You may need to try pressing the computer keys “CNTRL + Alt + DEL” to open your computer task manager.

2. If you are unable to restart, shut off your computer. This is a last resort in hopes that you will be able to reach your true virus scanner upon restart. However, beware that you may not be able to. (Hopefully you have a backup which we will expound on later.)

3. After restart, look for a “processes” tab. This is visible on your computer’s Task Manager if you can access it still. The hope is that your virus on your computer has not spread so rapidly that your computer is paralyzed. If you notice a group of randomly-generated numbers, chances are these are a result of a rogue virus implant. Right-click on them (or the process that causes this) and select “end process.”

4. Do not waste any time while doing this. When it comes to eliminating a rogue virus every second counts. If you wait too long you may have to reinstall everything on your hard drive instead of simply deleting the virus. To prevent computer crash, work as quickly as possible while doing this.

5. Keep researching about malware, and protect yourself. This will help you from future harmful hacking and attacks. It will help keep your computer clean and running smoothly if you know as much as possible about the possible malicious infections that could harm you. Using the latest and most reliable kinds of virus scanners will help you the most.

6. For further protection be careful when web surfing. Use caution when opening websites you do not know. It helps to have an authentic virus alert on your computer just in case you do. Then, you can immediately remove the threat. However, after hearing about rogue viruses you have every reason to be cautious about this too.

How to Get Rid of an O Length File

August 17, 2011 by

An “o length file” is a common nickname for a potentially annoying file that does not seem to go away when you try to delete it. Usually it is stored in your temporary internet files folder on your computer, and getting rid of it can be a pain.

However, if you know the correct procedure for removal of O files they are easier removed. Simple computer command prompts work for this purpose, but of course you need to know exactly where on your PC to go to do this .

Instructions

1. Determine whether deleting the file is necessary. If it is a O size file and you have an extremely large computer hard drive you may not even need to delete it. You could go to “My Computer” and set your mouse cursor on “Local Disk (C:)” which may otherwise be accessible as simply “C:/” or similar indicator that it is your hard drive.

Right click on the “C” drive shortcut icon and then go to “Properties.” This is where all your computer specs will be, including your hard drive space. (Sometimes it may also say for example “400 GB free of “500 GB” right under the shortcut icon.

Some computers have a pie graph indicated how much of your hard drive space you have used. If there is 50% or more left of free hard drive space it may not be necessary to delete this very small O file.

2. Open the file before you try to delete it. In most cases you are more than likely to have opened the file you want to remove from your computer. However, if you want to once more make absolutely sure you want it deleted then this is the time to do so.

3. Back up the file (just in case.) This may seem unnecessary if you are trying to delete it. However, do not be fooled, as some of the smallest files sometimes are the most important. You should back up the file just in case you did delete it and then later realized you should not have done so. Backing it up is good especially if it is a driver file extension you later found out you accidentally deleted. However, it is good to back it up even if it is a .txt, .doc, or other word processing file.

This is a good practice just in case you later have a hard time finding a replacement driver or file extension on the web. Sometimes this is necessary if you have a slightly older hardware or software program you still want to operate.

4. Access the file you want to delete from the “Start” menu. First click on “Start” then go to “All Programs” and when you are in that folder click on “Accessories.” Then, choose the “Command Prompt” option in the “Accessories” folder.

5. Type in “cd” in the appropriate place, and then press “Enter”. Usually you would type “cd” and then add the directory path prompt. One common example: “cd mark\documents\” (without the quotes). After you accomplished this, press “Enter.”

6. Delete the file. Usually you can do this by typing “del” and the name of the file and file extension into the appropriate field. For example if you want to delete “dogs1.doc” you would type “del dogs1.doc.”

7. Confirm action of deletion. You may be asked to confirm “yes or no” if you want to delete the file. If you are sure you are deleting the right file you can press “yes” and then press the “Enter” key again.

How to Get Rid of Wellaction.com

August 16, 2011 by

Wellaction.com is one of the most dangerous and annoying computer viruses out there. This highly infectious and malicious object has already ruined many operating systems. It also has caused many programs failures.

Personal information also has been stolen from people. In fact, Wellaction.com and other malicious sites are only out for one thing-to defraud people. This is done because it seems that an honest living just is not doing it for some people.

So, instead of going to school and getting an education and/or starting a legitimate business, these hackers steal from people. The way they do it is by getting you to open corrupted files or visiting corrupt websites.

You need to stop websites like Wellaction.com from taking advantage of you. Just follow the list of instructions you are given below. If you do, you have a greater chance of protecting your computer from hacking and infections.

Instructions

1. Take preventative action against malicious websites. For instance, you can install a software on your computer that alerts you when you visit a site such as Wellaction.com. You can also download and install a complete whole computer virus and malware scanner.

2. When downloading a virus scanner or malware detector, consider location. Usually all software like this would be stored in the “common files” or other “program files” folder once installed. If you want to remember where you downloaded this program for installation you can put it in a my downloads” folder.

3. Once you have downloaded a reputable virus scanner, run it. Make sure you choose a program that you know will detect specifically Wellaction.com. That way, you can decrease the risk of advertisers and merchants spying on you. More importantly, you improve your chances of remaining protected from identity theft.

4. Beware of additional virus removal safety issues (fake alerts). People who have been the victim of responding to a fake virus scan alert can warn you of this. Make sure you do not respond to just any random notice that there are viruses on your computer. You run a lower risk of being duped if you stick to only responding to alerts of the scanners installed on your computer.

5. For maximum protection against all malware, update, update, update! Ideally, your virus scanning software or other ad ware or spy ware detection software should be updated. You should at least do this once a day or every time you use the internet, whichever is greater. This will help you gain the best protection against each new malware attack.

6. Educate yourself on malware. Maybe you do not know much about specific viral hacking techniques, one of which involves Wellaction.com. Read more about these while safeguarding yourself against accidental attack on your computer. The more you educate yourself the cleaner your computer will remain.

7. Keep your hard disk clean. You may have plenty of space to store files and programs on your computer. However, there is an advantage of cleaning up your hard disk. The more you clean it up the less chance you have of having a viral attack. For one, you can delete all temporary internet files, passwords, and browsing histories.
