There is contraction in the throat’s back part when there is some object which touches the tongue or soft palate. This is called as gag reflex and it works towards prevention of choking. It is therefore a useful reflex. But in some people it is a problem especially when it is hyperactive. Many people puke when the dentist puts his instrument in the patient’s mouth. Some people also find it difficult to brush their teeth. It may even create a trouble while going for oral sex. If you want to get rid of your gag reflex here’s the guidelines:
Through desensitization
Desensitization means training your soft palate to get rid of gagging every now and then especially while receiving objects. You can do this wonderfully while you are brushing. First find out the place of gag. And the train your brush to move there and see you will have to gag. Again take the brush there. This is one sort of training. This is a desensitization process and it will take a few days to be successful. Don’t lose hope in just 1-2 days time. You must repeat the process now and again so that the gag reflex does not return.
While doing this training, stay in the moderate place. Do not move too far. Just do it once in the morning. It is not advisable to do it after lunch or dinner or else you may have to puke. While you are training your soft palate for gag reflex avoidance do not take breath from the mouth. Breathe through nose. And this training is not for children.
While you are at a dentist
If you are at the dental clinic then you must take certain measures so that while doctor is carrying out the procedure you do not get gag reflex. Try to breathe through nose and not mouth. Just before you visit the dentist for the procedure, make it a point to use the nasal decongestant. This will open the nasal passages and help you breathe properly. And so you can keep away the reflex. You may even start the throat spray which has numbing properties. This will also suppress the gag. During the dental appointment if you keep a pinch of salt on your tongue it will help out.
If you feel uncomfortable at the dentist’s place then let him know about it. He will be the person who will make you uncomfortable. You may even adopt techniques like listening to music, sipping up some water etc. in between while you are at the dentist.
If you want reduction in gag reflex then in that case you must use electric toothbrush. This will help a lot. Also, if you feel quite nauseated in the morning then change the brushing time. You may even talk to your family doctor or the psychologist. He may help you out. You can even take help of acupuncture, hypnosis and acupressure. Even homeopathy medication may be helpful.
