Moles are rat-like rodents that live underground and are blind. Their specialty is burrowing. They spend most of the time burrowing tunnels underground in search of earthworms, beetle larvae and other ground-dwelling insects. Although they do not bite and are not known to carry diseases, they can still cause a lot of trouble by damaging vegetable gardens and yards. As they rarely come out in the open, traps and poison are not effective against them. However, you can still remove them from your yard using the following methods:

Using mole repellents: You can keep away mole from your yard using homemade mole repellents such as a mixture of soap, pepper and bleach. Look for mole holes and pour the mixture down the holes. This will not kills the moles, but it is sure to drive them away.

Using mole bait: Earthworms are a mole’s favorite food and you can use one as bait. Dig out some earthworms, lace them with bromethalin and drop them down mole holes. Bromethalin is a powerful neurotoxin and when the mole eats the earthworm, it will quickly die. Use a pair of latex gloves when putting the chemical on the earthworm and keep it out of reach of children.

Deprive the mole of food source: The primary food sources of the mole are earthworms and Japanese beetle larvae, commonly known as grub. If you can remove these from your yard, the moles will go away to other places where food is more easily available. While removing earthworms is detrimental to the garden, they can be removed from other places where plants do not need to be grown. One way to remove earthworms and grub is to dehydrate the yard by spreading a find layer of diatomaceous earth. Once the food source is removed, the moles will automatically disappear.

Physical barriers: Although good diggers, moles cannot dig through dense and tough materials. Dig a trench around your yard, garden, patios and walkways and fill the same with soil and gravel. This prevents the moles from entering your yard. The trench should be deep enough so that the moles will not be able to dig a tunnel under it.

Using castor oil: Moles don’t like castor oil because it irritates their skin and gives them an itch. Water the yard thoroughly and pour castor oil all over the yard with the help of a spray bottle. This will penetrate the earth and drive the mole away.

Using moth balls: These harmless things can also be effective weapons against moles. Find the actively used tunnels and put the moth balls in their entrances.

Mole traps: Mole traps with an earthworm or grub can be places at the entrance of mole holes (tunnels), but they are not as effective as mouse traps because moles rarely come out of the ground.

Superglue is the superman of adhesives, and it is used everywhere from homes to industries. It can bond so rapidly and strongly that if you happen to spill just a few drops of it on your fingers, they will stick together before you realize what you have just done. If extra care is not taken when using superglue, this useful substance can damage your clothes, furniture and household items and even render them useless. Fortunately, even superglue has its nemesis and acetone is its ultimate enemy. In the absence of acetone, nail polish remover can also be used equally effectively. Here are some effective ways to remove superglue from everyday items with and without the use of acetone.

From Clothes/fabrics: Put the cloth/fabric on the ironing board, place a paper towel on the area affected by the superglue, and then press it with warm iron. Increase the heat gradually until the superglue melts. The melted glue will be absorbed by the paper towel. If some of the glue is still there, replace the paper towel with a new paper towel and repeat the process until there is no trace of the glue left.

From Glass: Soak a ball of cotton in acetone or nail polish remover and place the same on the area affected by superglue. Leave it for a few minutes to give the superglue time to dissolve and then wipe if off with a fresh cotton ball.

From Metal: The first thing you’ll need to do is wear a pair of latex gloves to protect your skin from corrosion. Take a piece of rug or a large cotton ball and dab it with acetone or nail polish remover. Wipe the affected part of the metal with the rug or cotton ball until the superglue softens. Pluck off he softened superglue with a plastic scraper and throw it into the dustbin. Finally, wash the metal surface with soap and water, and dry it with a cotton cloth.

From Counter-tops and Laminated flooring: Put a few drops of acetone or nail polish remover on the affected area and wait until the superglue dissolves. Scrape of the glue with a plastic scrape and wipe off the remainder with a clean cloth. Remove the remaining stain by gently rubbing with a fine sand paper.

From your Skin: If you have accidentally spilled superglue on any part of your body, first resist the temptation to scratch it off with your fingers or any sharp object as doing so may result in injury. Put a few drops of acetone-based nail polish remover on the affected area and wait for the superglue to dissolve. After the glue has dissolved, wash it off with water and soap. Depending upon the severity of the spillage, this may have to be done several times until the glue is completely removed.

Spray paints are commercial products that are made to stick to almost any surface. They cling especially stubbornly on concrete surface. Accidental spray paint marks make floors, walls, driveways, paths look dirty and unattractive. Fortunately, there are some effective ways to remove the marks.

Use a garden hose and plastic brush: If the paint spray paint mark on the concrete floor or wall is still fresh, use a garden hose to wash it off. The hose must have a strong spray nozzle to produce enough force to wash off the paint. Use a plastic brush to scrub the remaining paint and then wash that off as well with the hose.

Paint thinner: Pour some paint thinner over the spray paint marks and let it dry for half an hour. This dissolves the spray paint. Use a hard brush to scrub off the paint and then wash away the residue with clean water.

Chemical strippers: Pour some chemical stripper on the paint mark. You can also apply it with a brush if you like. The stripper dissolves the spray paint and makes it easier to remove. Now scrape off the paint with a hard brush and wash it away with water. This method is especially useful for smooth concrete surfaces and difficult places such as cracks, crevices and holes.

Oven cleaner: The oven cleaner you probably have in your kitchen can also be used to remove spray paint quite effectively. Spray the cleaner on the paint mark and let is dry for 15 minutes. This dissolves the spray paint. Take a wire brush and scrub the mark off the concrete and then wash the residue away with water.

Gel paint remover: This is said to be the best spray paint remover. Take a soy based gel stripper and apply it liberally on the paint mark. Wait for 5 to 15 minutes for the gel to take effect. The gel hardens the paint and makes it like skin, which can be peeled off the concrete surface easily. This is a very neat way of removing spray paint from the floor and walls.

High pressure water: You can use a jet of water at a very high pressure to remove spray paint marks from a concrete surface. For effective result, you will need to set the power level to 4,000 pounds per square inch (PSI), secure the nozzle tightly and point the jet directly on the paint mark. This will effectively wash away the paint marks from cracks and crevices and you won’t have to get down on your knees either.

Blast the paint off: If spray paint marks are scattered all over the concrete floor, you can use an industrial sandblaster along with fine-grit sand to blast them off. This method is very effective for spray paints that are deeply embedded in cracks and crevices. This is the way they do it in construction sites.

Something as mundane as removing candle wax from the floor, table, carpet and wall can take up hours of chore if you don’t know how to do it properly. You may not think candle wax much of a problem, but once it flows down from a burning candle and gets stuck to a surface, it can be obstinate. Luckily, it leaves no stain and for this reason many people do not even bother to remove them until a later date. But as the wax grow older, they become yellowish and then blackish. This makes your home look dirty. Therefore, candle wax should be removed as soon as possible.

While you can remove candle wax with a kitchen knife or even with your fingers, you should avoid doing that as it can leave permanent cut marks and scars on the surface. In fact, never use any sharp object to remove candle wax from any type of surface, whether smooth or rough. You will only end up damaging and disfiguring the surface. Here are some ingenious ways you can remove candle wax from any surface without damaging the surface.

Using a hair dryer: This is one of the best methods for expensive furniture, glassware and oil painted walls that you won’t even dream of spoiling. You will need a hair dryer and a piece of clean, soft cloth. Blow dry the surface with the wax until the wax melts and then wipe it off with the soft clean cloth. This is the best way to remove candle wax from smooth surfaces.

Using a hot iron: The above is good only for a smooth surface. If you try it on a carpet, you will end up creating more mess. Therefore, the best way to remove candle wax from a carpet is to use a hot iron. First, scrape off the wax with a blunt knife or scale. Then spread a clean cloth on top of the waxed area and place a hot iron on top of it. The heat of the iron melts and vaporizes the wax which floats right up into the air. If the wax is new, let it become hard first; otherwise ironing it will make the carpet messy.

Using a paper bag: If you have accidentally dropped candle wax on your clothes, do the following. First, scrape the blotches with a blunt knife. After that put the cloth on top of the ironing board, take a paper bag and place it on the waxed area, and then press it with a hot iron from inside the paper bag. The melted wax will stick to the paper and the cloth will be free of wax.

Using the freezer: If the candle wax is stuck obstinately inside the candle holder or kitchen utensils made of ceramic, the best way to remove it is to put it in the freezer for a few hours. The frozen wax can be easily plucked off with your fingers or a toothpick.

Not only do these little white worm like creatures look creepy and disgusting, they can also spread diseases. They are usually found wriggling in places where there are garbage, feces and rotting materials. They are resistant to most chemicals and can be a real source of headache if left alone. Here are some of the ways to effectively kill maggots.

Using boiled water: This is one of the most effective ways to kill maggots instantly. Boil water in a large pot and pour it over the areas infested by the maggots. Make sure that you use enough boiled water, otherwise some larvae may escape to live another day. After they are dead, pick them up with tweezers, put them in a paper or plastic bag and throw the same in the dustbin.

Using a steam cleaner: If you have maggots on the carpet, cracks in the walls and furniture or in your pet’s fur, pouring boiled water is not a good idea. Instead, you can use a steam cleaner which produces a high temperature low moisture vapor that kills the maggots but doesn’t damage the surface. Pick up the dead maggots with tweezers, put them in a paper or plastic bag and throw the same in the dustbin.

Drowning in alcoholic beverage: Flies and maggots are attracted to the smell of alcoholic beverages and other substances that smell sweet and foul. If you have a maggot infestation in your home, place a large bowl of beer near the infested area. The maggots will crawl into the bowl and drown to death.

Stamping on them: The easiest and the least expensive method to kill maggots is to place a paper on them and to stamp on it with your feet. This method, however, should only be used outdoors as it is sure to make the floor and carpets inside the house messy. If you find a few maggots inside your home, pick them up with tweezers, take them outside, place a paper over them and stamp on the paper.

Using pesticides: If maggot infestation is overwhelming, then the only way to get rid of them is to use pesticides. But be careful when handling chemicals because they may be harmful to your and your children’s health. Also, make sure that all the maggots in the infested areas die; otherwise the surviving ones may develop immunity which they will pass onto to their offspring when they become files.

When it comes to insect pests like flies and maggots, prevention is always better than cure. Therefore, keep your home, backyard and garden free of human and pet excreta and rotting food materials and dead animals. If you see any of them, get rid of them as soon as you can. These are breeding grounds for maggots.

Flies are such survivors that they exist everywhere on earth. With multiple eyes, sharp senses and fast wings, they may be among the fastest and smartest insects. They are attracted by the smell of food, rotting food materials and human and animal excreta. They are not only irritating; they are also a source of diseases such as cholera. Once your home is infested by a swarm of flies, it is almost impossible to get rid of them. The settle on your body, on the table, on food, on drinks and almost everywhere you can think of. Worse still, they can lay eggs which can hatch into creepy and disgusting looking maggots in no time at all. Here are some effective ways to kill a fly.

Using your hands: If you have dexterous hands, you can easily catch a fly or two with just a swipe or two. You can also use your palms to flatten them on the surface they are sitting. However, from a hygienic point of view, this is not a method you should use often as you may be infected with the germs that the flies are carrying.

Using your magazine: If you like insect-hunting, then this is both effective and fun. Roll up your newspaper or magazine and use it to swat the flies. If you miss the first time, try it again and again. This is a time-tested method to kill flies that is both efficient and enjoyable. But the problems are the surface with be splattered with the flies’ body parts and blood that you will have to wash off with water and detergents afterwards.

Using a fly swatter: Here is a proper weapon that looks more professional and is more effective than a rolled up magazine or newspaper. You will also get more fun out of it as you won’t have to keep rolling it up or do anything like that. If you want a more high-tech equipment, there you can buy electric flyswatters that electrocute the pesky little creatures the moment they come into contact. As with the above, flyswatters leave a mess on the surface that you will have to clean up later.

Burn them: Flies like sweet and foul smelling food, garbage and rotten food. Pile these up in your backyard and set it on fire. Many of them get caught in the blaze and die, others will get caught in the smoke and suffocate to death. Most will probably fly away, but that at least gets rid of them for some time.

Using insecticides: When the fly infestation is overwhelming, the only option will be to use insecticides. You can use either sprays or grains laced with poison. Very effective against flies and other insects, they are not harmful to humans and pets. Afterwards, you’ll have to remove the dead flies from the floor using either a vacuum cleaner or a broom.

People use refrigerators every day and yet most people fail to take proper care of it. Because of all the food we keep in it and for months at a stretch in some cases, it begins to give off a foul odor if not cleaned regularly. In fact, the stench coming out of a refrigerator can be so horrible that people are sent dashing in to bathroom to puke. This especially happens when a refrigerator with meat and half opened canned food is left without power supply for a few days. In such case, there can even be maggots crawling all over the inside walls and trays. But even when the power supply is on constantly, a refrigerator can still smell because of the leftover foods and uncooked foods that begin to go bad after a while. If your refrigerator smells, here are the steps to effectively get rid of the odor.

Take out all the foods and put the refrigerator on defrost mode so that the remaining frozen bits and pieces will come off the walls and trays. As the cleaning process may take a long time, make sure to put all the perishable foods like meat and fish in a cooler.

Throw away the foods that have gone bad or are in the process of going bad. A part of cleaning a refrigerator is to throw away rotting food because it is rotting food that is responsible for the smell in the first place.

After the refrigerator is defrosted, switch it off and pull out the power supply. Take out all the removable trays and put them in a bowl of soapy water. Use a sponge to remove the dirt, grime and food from the trays and rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Now put them out in the sun to dry. This will kill off the remaining bacteria and germs sticking on them.

Put some baking soda in water and stir the mixture thoroughly. Baking soda absorbs the odor from any surface and is good for removing all kinds of smells. Scrub the entire inner walls, ceilings and floors of the refrigerator using a soft scrubber, leaving nothing untouched. Do not use anything that can make cuts and scratches on the refrigerator.

Wash the the inside of the refrigerator thoroughly with soap and water. At this point, you can also add some alcohol in the water because it acts as a disinfectant.

Rinse the refrigerator with clean fresh water until all residues of the soap and baking soda are washed off.

Leave the refrigerator open to dry and once it is dry, put back all the removable trays, switch it back on and shut it. Remember that you mustn’t leave the refrigerator open for too long as that might cause the cooling gas to escape which will render the fridge useless.

Skunks have the reputation for being the smelliest mammals on earth. It’s not their body that stinks; it’s the urine which they use as a defense mechanism against predators and competitors that does. In many place in the US, skunks like to live in the proximity of humans because of easy availability of food and shelter. And annoyingly, they tend to squirt on anything that comes across them, including humans and pet animals. If you happen to live in an area infested by skunks, you will know that there is hardly any smell that is more disgusting and overpowering than skunk odor. Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of skunk smells and here are some of them:

From you body: If you can lay your hands on some hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, you will easily be able to get rid of skunk stench. Add a quart of hydrogen per oxide to half a cup of baking soda and mix the two to make a thick paste. Rub the paste liberally on your skin, wait for a few minutes and then take a shower. You can use any of your favorite soaps and shampoos to wash off the paste. This will leave you smelling as fresh as ever.

From your pet: If you pet animal has skunk smell on it, first rub baking soda on its skin with your hands. Wearing a pair of gloves would be a good idea. Then rub a little hydrogen peroxide on the pet’s skin. Wait for a few minutes and then give the pet a good bath. You can use any pet soaps and shampoos to wash off the mixture.

From you home and workplace: If your home, workplace, garage and other areas are filled with the terrible skunk stench, the best and the least expensive way to get rid of it is to use bleach. Add some bleach to a big bucket of water, stir the mixture and pour the mixture over the areas where the skunk smell is coming from. A few words of caution: when you are pouring the mixture, the stink actually becomes worse. But slowly, the mixture will evaporate and take the skunk smell away with it. Wait for four to five hours and then wash off the area with clean water.

From your clothes: If the horrible skunk stench is coming out of your clothes, carpets and mattresses wash them with some vinegar and baking soda. First, mix these two substances in water and then use wash the clothes with the water. You can use any fabric soap. When washing a carpet, scrub properly. After that dry the clothes in the sun as the heat and fresh air will remove whatever smell that is left behind. If this doesn’t work, then your only option is to take the clothes to the dry cleaners.

Every home has a pile of old clothes they don’t know what to do with. Young mothers have heaps of baby clothes that their children have grown out of. Teenagers and adolescents have loads of clothes they don’t want to be seen in because they are not in fashion anymore. Adults have closetful of clothes that are too faded to wear. The reason for this is that people have a habit of stashing away old clothes rather than throwing them away in the hope that they might come handy someday or because they are sentimentally attached to them. But when your home overflows with old clothes, you will be left with no choice but to dispose of them. Here are some profitable ways to get rid of old clothes:

Leave them at the Resale Store: If you have old clothes that are reusable, take them to the resale store where they will offer you a price. If you like the price, leave them there. If you don’t, make a bargain or take them to another store that will offer a better price.

Sell them at an online auction: If you feel uncomfortable about taking your old clothes to the local resale store, then offer them for a price on an online auction. There are lots of online auction sites to choose from. Choose the one that is nearest to your home and offers you the best deal. You will be asked to post a photo and description of each item you want to sell along with the price. Each item goes to the highest bidder so you will get.

Sell them at a garage sale: Organize a garage sale at your home or participate in one organized by your friends, acquaintances or organizations you are affiliated with. You will have to be there at your ‘stall’ or ‘car boot’ to personally sell the items, so prepare yourself for the hard bargaining that eventually takes place.

Swap with friends, neighbors and acquaintances: Spread the word among your friends, acquaintances and neighbors that you wish to swap old clothes and then organize a swap party at your home or club. This is a great way to get rid of old clothes you don’t want and getting clothes you need or have always wanted but never got around to buying.

Give them away to charity: If you like helping people around the world who are less fortunate than you, then give the clothes away to charity. Your clothes may end up helping save the lives of impoverished and dispossessed people in your neighborhood or in a faraway country. You won’t get any money out of this, but the satisfaction that comes from the knowledge that you have helped someone is worth a million dollars.

Recycle the clothes: If the old clothes are still in good condition, why not recycle them? Make something useful out of them such as a windows wiper. This way you can use it until it becomes tattered enough to throw into the dustbin or garbage bag without any sentiments attached.

Ants are the most numerous insects on earth. It is estimated that there are about 1 quadrillion ants in the world. That is roughly 150,000 ants for every human. But because they are so tiny we do not feel either threatened or overwhelmed by them. Most ants live in the wild and cause not trouble. But there are some ants that like to live near humans because of easy availability of food. These ants enter our homes in search of food and may sometimes shift their entire colony into the cracks and crevices in our homes in search of shelter. They will then become a nuisance by invading our kitchen, dining table and food jars. Fortunately, they are not impossible to get rid of and here are some of the ways:

Baby powder: Surprising, but it works. Sprinkle some baby powder on the infested areas and the ants will vanish into thin air the same way they appeared.

Cayenne pepper: Draw a line using cayenne pepper. This acts as a boundary line as ants generally do not cross the line.

Cinnamon: For some reason, ants do not like cinnamon. Place one at the site of infestation and ants will abandon the area immediately.

Bay leaves: Ants follow one another using smell and the aroma of the bay leaves has a disorientating effect on them, so place a few along their trail to disorient them.

Vinegar: Squirt vinegar in areas of ant infestation and let it dry. Ants will not dare come near the area as long as the odor the vinegar remains.

Black pepper: Sprinkle black pepper powder in areas infested by ants. They will immediately scatter and abandon the area and will not return as long as the smell of the peppers lingers in the area. Black pepper is an effective repellent for all kinds of insects.

White chalk: Draw a line with a while chalk around the infested area and the ants will not cross the line.

Peppermint oil: Ants do not like the smell of peppermint. Take a spray bottle, fill it with water and add 10 to 15 drops of peppermint spirit, better known as peppermint essential oil. Shake the bottle well to mix properly and spray the mixture in areas of infestation. Ants will abandon the place immediately and will not come back as long as the smell of peppermint lingers.

Cloves: Put cloves in the infected areas and the ants will quickly vanish into thin air.

Red Chili powder: Make a paste of red chili powder by mixing it with water. Find the entry and exit points of ants and apply the paste at the exact spot. Ants will stop using the route because red chili is a very effective insect repellent.

Borax: Add some borax to a solution of water and sugar. Sprinkle the solution along the ant trail. This is a lethal poison for ants and the ones that eat the solution die immediately.
