Almost everyone has to use a computer on a daily basis in order to get things done. Not only are these essential for doing work, they are also essential for keeping in contact and doing just about anything else. All the staring at the computer can cause you to develop dry eyes that are irritating and bothersome. If you want to avoid those dry eyes, then there are a few things you can do.
1. Limit Staring
When you are sitting at your computer, how long does it take you to look at something else? When you are staring at one computer screen for a long time your eyes are going to dry out, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. By looking at something like a wall for a few minutes every 10 or 15 minutes your eyes will be able to adjust and focus on something else. Make sure that whatever you’re looking at is around 10 feet away and not closer than that. This will give your eyes a chance to focus on something that isn’t close up.
2. Blink Your Eyes
Blinking lubricates your eyes and is something you do automatically, except for when you’re looking at a computer or television screen. By making an effort to blink more often while you’re on the computer you will be able to keep your eyes more moisturized. Also try closing your eyes for several seconds whenever you get a chance. This will give them a chance to rest.
3. Get off the Computer
It’s possible to use the computer all the time without noticing how much time you spend on it, but you should take time of it. For example, instead of shopping online, you might want to go shop inside of a store. This will give you a chance to walk around and will ensure your eyes aren’t constantly staring at a screen. It’s always nice to get away from the computer for a while and explore real life.
If you use your computer for work, try to get your work done in a shorter amount of time. This will save a lot of time that you would otherwise spend staring aimlessly at the screen. You might be surprised at how much work you can get done when you focus on doing it in a short amount of time.
4. Adjust Computer Settings
There are a lot of settings you can change on your computer screen that can make it easier to look at. For example, is your computer screen too bright? Try dimming the light to see how your eyes adjust to it. Also play around with the resolution settings and anything else that makes the computer screen easier to look at. If you’re using a laptop you will find that dimming your screen brightness will also result in saving battery life, which is useful if you don’t have a place to plug it in.
5. Avoid Glare
Bright lights, the sun or even white walls can all cause glare on your computer screen. This can strain your eyes and cause a lot of dryness without you even realizing it. Next time you’re going to use your computer, go in a darkened room where there isn’t any bright light. You will find that your eyes are able to relax in this setting and it’s easier to work without getting dry eyes.
6. Change Text Size
Did you know that you can change the size of the text for everything you see on your computer? All you have to do is go into the settings of your computer and adjust it to the size you want the text to be. This can make it a lot easier for you to read things, especially if you have eyesight issues. This doesn’t have to be a permanent change, as you can adjust the text size whenever you need to.
- If you have chronic dry eyes, then you should see your doctor. They will be able to give you a prescription based on your specific type of dry eyes.
- Use eye drops from a drug store if you can’t seem to find relief. There are a lot of products on the market and they are all pretty affordable as well as easy to find.
