Most of our health problems are the result of bad eating habits. Curbing the craving for food is one of the most difficult things to do. This is the reason why most of the people end up overeating. Overeating alone is not the problem. Overeating of junk and unhealthy food is the biggest problem. Whenever we crave for food, we don’t crave for healthy food. Our craving is mostly for the food which gives pleasure to our taste buds. Unfortunately, delicious foods are more often than not unhealthy foods. If you want to stay healthy, you will need to change your eating habits. You will need to find a way to avoid overeating. Here are some ways to stop the habit of overeating.
Drink a Lot of Water
Drinking a lot of water can curb your appetite and hence prevent you from overeating. When you drink a lot of water, your stomach feels full and you don’t feel like eating. It is advisable that you drink a few glasses of water half an hour before your meal. Also, do not drink water immediately after eating. Drink water at least after one hour gap. Drinking water immediately before or after a meal affects your digestive system.
You can also drink water when you are feeling hungry at the non-meal time. Sometimes your stomach sends false hunger alarm to your brain. At that time your body does not require any food. You just need to kill the hunger. The hunger can very well be killed by drinking water.
Eat Frequently But In Lesser Quantity
You may have noticed that while you are hungry you tend to eat up a lot. After a while your stomach starts feeling full and you realize that you have overeaten. While you are eating, it takes 15 to 20 minutes for your stomach to send the signals to the brain that it is full. Therefore, even when the requirements of your stomach are fulfilled, your brain doesn’t know it. This makes you continue eating. This again results in overeating.
You may have also noticed that when you are very hungry, and you eat in small quantity your hunger is not satisfied immediately and you feel like eating more. However, after a while your hunger is no longer there. So the key is in conditioning your stomach to lighter meals.
Have a Clear Goal In Your Mind
If you need to do something successfully, you need to have a reason to do it. If you have a reason, you will be able to achieve it. If overeating hadn’t bothered you in the past, it may be because you were not aware of its consequences. However, after overeating for many years you may have started realizing the bad impacts it has on your body.
Define fitness goals for yourself. Write down how fit you want to be after a few months. The goals should be measurable. If you are overweight, you can aim at reducing certain amount of weight in certain amount of time. When you have a goal in mind, you can work according to it. Make sure that you remember your goal every day. Read your goals at least once in a day. Whenever you are about to overeat remind yourself of your fitness goals.
Get Rid of All The Unhealthy Food In Your House
Make eating a little difficult for yourself. If you have all the processed and junk food stored in your refrigerator, you are more likely to give in to your urge. You will end up reaching out to your fridge and eating the unwanted food. If there is no unhealthy food in your house, you will have to make extra effort to go out and buy it. It will discourage you from eating such food. Fill your house up with the healthy food. Whenever you feel hungry, only eat the healthy food.
Schedule Your Meals And Stick To It
Most of us eat only when we are very hungry. When you are very hungry you tend to eat more. One of the best ways to avoid overeating is by scheduling your meals. Schedule it in such a way that you eat even when you are not hungry. This will ensure that you never eat when you are very hungry and hence you can avoid overeating. But this will only work when you stick to the schedule. You will need a lot of determination and focus to make this happen.
Chew The Food Longer
Chewing your food for a long time is another way to avoid overeating. Eat your food slowly and chew it longer. As already mentioned, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the brain to realize that the stomach is full. When you eat slowly, you will eat less but feel fuller within 15 to 20 minutes. Chewing your food properly also improves your digestive system.
