How To Get Rid of Abrasions

Human skin is a two layered structure incorporating the epidermis and dermis. While the exterior layer referred to as epidermis has the fundamental function of protection, the interior layer of dermis ushers malleability. Any form of discomfort to these layers is termed as an abrasion. Such type of injuries can be a result of minor accidents caused on the road, home or work place. Those ardently involved in sports or activities like cycling and skating often suffer from abrasions.

Characteristics of a Typical Abrasion

One could suffer from an abrasion as a consequence of working with a sharp device, due to a sudden fall on a hard ground or merely just rubbing against a hard or uneven surface. This category of injury causes superficial discomfort. Although abrasions come with minimal blood loss issues, the revelation of nerve ends can lead to unbearable pain. Whether minor or major, anything associated with the body requires immediate attention and care.

Remedial Steps

Abrasions can usually be tackled at home without the requirement of a professional. Here are some ways in which you could get rid of abrasions and minimize the pain levied by such wounds.

  • As a preliminary step, one must exert some pressure on the site of abrasion in order to stop any bleeding caused by the minor accident. This action requires a hygienic cloth or gauge and the action must be conducted for approximately 10 minutes.
  • Clean the affected area with soapy water for about 5 minutes. Care must be taken to rub and completely remove any form of dirt accumulated in the area. Ensure that rubbing does not cause further damage to the skin.
  • Loose skin is commonly noticed at the site of the abrasion. This can be trimmed conveniently as the dead skin does not cause any pain. However, the scissor for the procedure must be sterilized or washed thoroughly with rubbing alcohol.
  • The process of dressing involves application of any ointment with antibiotic attributes and bandaging the area thereafter. The dressing should be regularly changed. You could also avail the option of using a liquid bandage.
  • Care must be taken to keep the site of injury moist as this will accelerate healing.
  • You must view the wound daily. One must be alert for signs of infection. In cases of any inflammation, redness or pus formation, contact a doctor at the earliest.

Handling the Scar

Once the healing process is over, at times the abrasion may leave behind a scar. Such scars are obviously undesirable. However, instead of hiding the scar or feeling terrible, try remedies that can offer a cure.

  • Abrasions are usually accompanied by discolouration of skin. Aloe Vera is believed to have high potential in terms of scar removal. Juice obtained from Aloe Vera has bleaching characteristics that could normalise the tone of any discoloured skin. You could also experiment with cucumber paste for gaining the same result.
  • Those with extremely sensitive skin could opt for honey. Since ancient times, honey is known to have intense healing powers. Owing to its antiseptic properties, honey furnishes one of the best home remedies for healing. When applied on scars, it certainly reduces the visual impact of the abrasion.
  • Regular massaging of the scar with olive oil could also facilitate the fading phenomena.
  • As a general rule, eat foods rich in Vitamin E to promote skin attributes. Incorporation of vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, and fruits like kiwi in one’s diet regimen is advisable.

As a natural mechanism, the human body has the potential to heal wounds. Once the wound has been given immediate attention and dressing, all you require is a healthy, well balanced diet, loads of water and sound sleep. Within no time, you will be free from any signs of the abrasion.
