How to Get Rid of Depression

At its most basic definition, depression is a persistent feeling of sadness. Most people experience some spells of depression sometime in their lives, and it’s perfectly normal to go through a low emotional period once in a while, particularly in times of stress or illness, or following a loss or emotional event. For most people a spell of depression is just that—a short spell—but an ongoing case of depression lasting for a seemingly indefinite period of time can have serious adverse effects on a person’s life and health, and may be a sign of clinical depression for which a person should seek medical assistance. Happily, there are ways to shed the shadow of either type of depression.

Transitory Depression

The experience of depression with which most people are familiar is the short-lived and transitory period of downturned moods, often triggered by emotionally traumatic events such as a break-up or divorce, job loss, death of a loved one, or disappointment of hopes. If you can identify a specific situation which has led to a bout of depression, the best way to alleviate the depression is to do what you can to address that situation. An unhappy event often can’t be “un-done,” but you can take steps to move yourself forward into the next phase of where you would like your life to be leading. Short-term grief counseling may help you to deal with the root anxieties of your depression, new activities can redirect your thoughts and emotions into more positive channels, and sometimes even small things like talking with a trusted friend, taking a personal day off work to pamper yourself, or some other treat can help you jolt yourself off the depression-tracks and onto a more

positive mental path.

Meditation is an approach which millions of people have found effective in alleviating anxiety and revitalizing a person’s more affirming emotions. It can be as simple a practice as sitting comfortably and breathing deeply for ten minutes, and you can easily find a variety of different guided meditations online or through other resources if you would like to find a meditation practice that fits your personality. A regular practice of meditation has been clinically proven to relax tensions in muscles and internal organs, activate the release of endorphins and other hormones that help a person to feel happier, and generally “re-set” the body into a more positive emotional mind frame.

Clinical Depression

In contrast to the transitory episodes of depression which many people experience briefly, a case of clinical depression is a much more serious issue. It can last indefinitely and affect every area of a person’s life, rendering the sufferer practically incapable of functioning in everyday life, and too often leading to suicidal thoughts or even attempts. Clinical depression is generally a matter of imbalanced brain chemistry, and a doctor can work with you to find the right medication to restore your more joyful self through balancing the body’s hormones. Counseling can be an invaluable aid in this as well, but should not be considered a substitute for medication.
