How to Get Rid of Double Chins
A “double chin” is the name commonly used for the extra layer of fat which sometimes accumulates below the jaw as people age or gain weight. Many people feel self-conscious about the appearance of double chins, particularly if they are not otherwise excessively overweight, but feel that the double chin makes them appear heavier than their actual weight would indicate. If you cringe at photographs at yourself, or find yourself trying to position your head to minimize the chins whenever someone breaks out a camera, you may want to look into some options to help get rid of the double chins altogether.
Medical Concerns Associated with Double Chins
In addition to the inconvenience and self-consciousness caused by double chins, there may be health issues associated as well. Double chins can contribute to sleep apnea (when a person abruptly stops breathing during sleep) and snoring, which can interfere with the ability of the snorer (not to mention any sleeping companion) to get an adequate night’s rest. Many health problems are exacerbated by obesity, so in addition to the cosmetic considerations of eliminating the double chins, it is to your advantage generally to make it a priority to lose excess weight. Work with your physician to choose a healthy plan of dieting and exercise to help you shed unwanted pounds, and you’ll be feeling better about more than just your chins.
Some Exercises Target Chin Fat to Minimize the “Double Chin” Effect
These exercises won’t eradicate the chin fat entirely, but they can help by toning the neck and chin to minimize the visual effect of the double chins. You can perform these exercises anywhere—sitting at your desk at work, for example, or making a habit of engaging in the exercises whenever you’re on the phone.
Tilt your head to one side and press against the back of your head with the opposite hand (left hand when you’re tilting your head to the right). Push against your head with the hand while you straighten your head to an upright position, providing resistance to make the neck muscles work harder to move the head. Repeat on the other side, and add repetitions while you’re waiting in traffic, or watching television, or any other time when you have a few moments and your hands free.
Minimize Your Double Chins
You may already have recognized from photographs that some positions and ways of holding your head can exaggerate the appearance of double chins; conversely, you can take care to avoid those positions, and hold yourself so the chins are minimized. Stand straight and pay attention to your posture, as slouching will only accentuate the effect of fat rolls beneath the chin. When you stand straight, your neck is elongated and the rolls aren’t bunched up. Smiling actually pulls the skin to tighten up the rolls beneath the skin, so a pleasant smile accentuates your attractiveness in more ways than one. You can also consider styling your hair to minimize the visual prominence of the double chins.
