One of the most painful complications that can befall human beings due to consumption of contaminated food is food poisoning. Food poisoning can never be taken lightly as ignoring such a thing may even cause death of the infected person!

Food poisoning is basically caused by eating contaminated food. The poisoning can be mild, but sometimes, it can be life-threatening, depending on the kind of bacteria that has contaminated the food. Late treatment can also be a reason.
Viral food poisoning
There are three main kinds of virus which cause food poisoning:
- Rotaviruses cause moderate to severe illness, usually having watery diarrhea, vomiting, and fever as symptoms. These viruses are normally the main causative agents of food poisoning especially among children and infants. They are usually transmitted from person to person by fecal contamination of shared play areas and food.
- Hepatitis A causes mild illness with fever, loss of appetite and jaundice.
- Noroviruses are a group of viruses that bring about illnesses that are mild in nature, with accompanying symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and low-grade fever. They are the most common of viral cause of food poisoning in adults since they are transmitted from water, shellfish, or person to person contact.
Bacterial food poisoning can occur in two ways:
- Through the intestines getting infected which makes them to become inflammated and therefore resulting to a difficult water and nutrient absorption as well as diarrhea.
- Through the production of toxins in food that poison the digestive system. Upon ingestion, the food that is contaminated can have adverse effects such as failure of the kidneys and vomiting which may even result to death.
Toxic food poisoning
This type of food poisoning is not as common as the other bacterial and viral types. In most cases, illness results from mishandling or poor preparation of food ingredients, such as choosing wild mushrooms or fish.
Treatment for Food Poisoning
- Ease back into eating solids. Choose plain foods that work well with your stomach for instance lean meat, rice, fruits and wheat. If your nausea returns, stop eating.
- Try to cut back on solid foods. Drink plenty of liquid instead. Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, clear soda can be consumed though.
- Avoid certain foods. During the ailment period, avoid alcohol, caffeine, fatty foods and dairy products. Keep off them until you feel better.
- Don’t use anti-diarrheal medications. Diarrhea expedites the elimination of the toxins and bacteria in your digestive system, making your recovery from food poisoning that much faster.
- Get plenty of rest. Rest allows your body to recuperate and save up energy you lose while vomiting. Resting also increases the production of white blood cells that can fight off the bacteria or virus in your digestive system.
Here are some things you can do to prevent food poisoning:
- You must Wash and rinse your hands and cooking utensils well.
- Keep raw food separate from your ready-to-eat foods.
- Cook your food thoroughly in order to kill any bacteria present.
- Refrigerate and defrost food items properly.
- Do not store stale food, throw it away.
Eating food that is contaminated can damage your body up to an extent that it may even stop working. Being poisoned by food is definitely not something that any of us would want. Therefore, certain precautions must be taken to ensure that what we eat is 100% safe for us.
