Glaucoma is a serious condition of the eye, which causes loss of vision damaging the optic nerves. Glaucoma is caused by excess intraocular pressure. Intraocular pressure or IOP is the internal pressure, which helps in retaining the shape of the eye and lets it function properly. When this pressure becomes more than what is needed the eyeball tends to pop.

If a patient is suffering from glaucoma then it means he has too much of intraocular pressure that is damaging the optic nerves. Glaucoma gradually leads to loss of vision. Glaucoma can, however, be late to be detected. Glaucoma can be of two types:

Primary open-angle glaucoma: This can be the most serious kind of glaucoma, as it does not have any symptoms as such, and cannot be detected until the stage is advanced. Tunnel vision is often a previous state of this type of glaucoma.

Acute angle-closure glaucoma: With the physical blockage of normal drainage canals of the eyes, there is a sudden increase of intra ocular pressure. Development of this type of glaucoma can cause blindness in a day or two, and thus, immediate treatment and medication is needed. Symptoms of acute angle-closure glaucoma include:

  • Severe pain
  • Blurriness of vision
  • Reddening of eyes
  • Seeing of halos around light sources
