Whether a person would believe it or not, toenail fungus a common issue to have to deal with. Fungus or bacteria find themselves liking the damp and dark areas around the toenails and it thrives there because it is protected by the nail, and it enjoys the warmth of the socks and shoes. Many nail abnormalities are caused by this as are infections.

Symptoms

  • Discoloration of toenail to a yellow or brown color
  • Swelling of the toe
  • Crumbling or thickening of the nail
  • Spots or streaks on the nail
  • Complete loss of nail

The Causes

There are a number of causes for toenail fungus which include:

  • PH levels that are not what they should be;
  • Immune system that has been compromised;
  • Foot wear or certain practices that don’t allow the feet to dry properly;
  • Tight fitting athletic socks and shoes that cause stress on those areas;
  • Public pools, bathrooms, shower stalls that have been contaminated.

The Treatments Available

There are a number of different treatments available. The first thing that a person should do is to see the doctor to have it properly diagnosed. The person may be referred to a podiatrist who would then prescribe an oral treatment if needed and would professionally trim the nails. There are treatments that don’t include the prescription for those who would prefer to try other remedies under the supervision of a doctor.

Medicated nail polish: Nail polish should not be used because it seals in the infection but there are medicated nail polishes that are designed to treat nail fungus. A podiatrist can prescribe this and it needs to be applied twice a week for milder cases.

Cutting and filing the nail down can help to get rid of the fungus. It can also prevent the spreading of it. It is generally done by the podiatrist instead of the regular means at home.

Topical ointments and creams are available by the dozens and they all claim to get rid of the problem but some work better than others. In the case that a person wants to choose something from those products they should do their research first. Vicks Vaporub has been used and is fairly effective as a treatment for this condition.

Tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial and anti-fungal and can be effective for this fungus. A few drops should be placed in the infected area each day and rubbed into the area. It can be mixed with lavender, olive or almond oils.

Preventative Measures

There are some things that can help to prevent this from happening. This includes using a powder to prevent the feet from sweating. The other is to have a healthy diet.
