You may have seen athletes literally live on neon-coloured health drink bottles. Have you ever wondered what these drinks are and why do athletes consume them so ubiquitously? These drinks are nothing but electrolytes that have the salt and minerals that athletes lose through perspiration.

What are electrolytes drinks?

Everybody these days has realized the importance of exercising regularly. That is why many people hit the gym as often as they can. And, everyone going to gym is after electrolyte drinks! However, the question is what are electrolyte drinks and why should they be consumed?

Homemade Electrolyte Drink

Our body contains six types of electrolytes, namely, sodium, calcium, potassium, hydrogen phosphate, magnesium chloride and hydrogen carbonate. These electrolytes enable our survival and if they get diluted, it may lead to water poisoning and consequently death. They help in the regulation of our nerves and muscles and maintain pH of blood, thereby helping to maintain our blood pressure. They are the prime source of hydration for the body. Hence, it is very important to ensure electrolytes in our body get replenished automatically.

In case of heavy exercisers and athletes, blood pressure increases owing to the hard work they put in.
Moreover, sweating leads to decrease in hydration. Hence, electrolyte drinks are consumed to hydrate the body and replenish the lost salts and minerals. This ensures the wellbeing of the body and prevents it from collapsing.

Electrolytes in the Market

There are numerous health drinks available in the markets whose ingredients are not known. They appear more like a sugary corn syrup. And, let’s not forget their high prices! So why not prepare electrolyte drinks at home? It is not only very simple to do, it also is healthier than the market options. Here are few daily ingredients that can be found in any kitchen and can be used in simple recipes to prepare homemade electrolyte drinks.
