How To Reduce Swelling During Pregnancy

One of the most undesirable feelings women experience during pregnancy is the swelling. While many experience only ankle swelling, the issue covers the entire feet for others. It occurs due to the accumulation of fluids in the feet of the woman. Swelling of the feet can be painful to some women, due to which they may not be able to move about or do their normal work as the months pass on. While the swelling is a temporary condition that will subside as soon as the woman delivers, it could be traumatic. Here are a handful of home remedies you can use when pregnant to prevent and ease the swelling of feet.

Simple Remedies To Prevent And Treat The Swelling During Pregnancy

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is known for its anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties that helps to reduce the itching, inflammation, and irritation of swelling.
Take Aloe Vera leaf and remove the thorn like parts of the leaf. Cut the leaves into strips and place these slices in a container and freeze them for some time. Apply this icy cold aloe Vera strip to relieve the burning, pain and itching sensation. Repeat this regularly to get relief from the swelling.

Mix two equal parts of water and vinegar. Soak a towel in this mixture and apply around the legs for 7 to 10 minutes. The process is repeated two to three times. Vinegar is known to absorb the fluids that gets accumulated in the swollen regions and offer relief.

3. Molasses and Aniseed

Add ½ a tablespoon blackstrap molasses and 1 tablespoon aniseed to 1 cup of boiling water Let this mixture simmer until it reduces to ½ a cup. Drink 3 to 4 cups of this solution to ease pregnancy induced swelling.

4. Black Tea Bags

Tannic acid present in the tea has natural astringent property that helps to ease the swelling and pain associated with hemorrhoids. Take a cup of hot water and dip a black tea bag. Leave it for few minutes and remove it from the water. Let it cool slightly and apply this warm, wet tea bags to the swollen veins. Allow it to stay at that place for about 10 minutes and do this for 2 – 3 times a day. You can apply the cold and used tea bags also for 5 – 10 minutes. Repeat this regularly to get rid of the problem.

Prunes have laxative effect that helps to soften the stools which in turn helps to treat the swelling. Soak 3 prunes in water for 2 hours and eat them daily to get relief from the problem. You can have prune juice daily to get rid of the pain and discomfort. Or you can take prunes in any other supplement forms regularly to fend off the problem.

Coconut oil is another effective home remedy used to treat hemorrhoids induced swelling in pregnant women. Coconut oil has saturated medium chain saturated oils that contains many nutrients essential for your body to prevent the swelling. It also contains antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties that helps to treat this problem. Massage the affected region with warm coconut oil in gentle clockwise, circular motions. You can also heat coconut oil with turmeric powder and camphor for better results.

7. Potatoes

Potatoes have astringent properties that help to relieve the pain and itching associated with this condition. Wash 2 potatoes thoroughly under running water. Cut them into small chunks and place them in a blender and blend it till they turn to a soft paste. Add a few teaspoons of water (if it is dry) and spread the mashed taters into a thin gauze bandage or clean kerchief to make it like poultice. Fold it into half and apply this on the hemorrhoids for about 5 – 10 minutes. Repeat this to get complete relief from the problem.

8. Ice

Ice helps to constrict the blood vessels, reduce the swelling and give immediate relief from the pain. Wrap the ice pieces in a cloth and place it on affected areas to alleviate swelling.
