Making foolish purchases is what causes quite a bit of people to go into debt. They may have spent too much of their monthly living budget on things they do not need. Now, they are desperately seeking a way to learn how to get rid of impulse buying.

Intro to Impulsive Shopping

impulsive shopping (buying) is the act of making a purchase that was not planned. This is fine once in awhile especially if you see an item you commonly use on sale. However, too much of this and you will be way over your household budget in no time.

Regarding impulse buying, oftentimes people engage in “retail therapy” to try to fill some deeper unmet need. Loneliness is often a cause of making unplanned purchases, mainly because a person just wanted to be somewhere that other human life is present.
It could even be said that the thrill that accompanies making a purchase is similar to that of sexual gratification. It could also be the same excitement experienced when abusing alcohol or drugs. A little shopping is fine but excess is not good for you.

Causes of Impulse Buying

Jealousy and envy could be a reason people make purchases they maybe cannot even afford. They want to keep up with their friends and they want to have the things their friends have.

However, stress is another factor, and as already mentioned above people do it just for the sake of filling a lonely void. It also may be a way to divert from other issues such as feeling unworthy or unloved.

Addressing the Problem

A shopaholic does not necessarily become that way overnight. It often does not occur until a person starts to have more disposable income. If a person does not address this issue no amount of money they make will ever be enough.

Here are some pointers for helping you get rid of impulse buying:

  • Own the problem. You can only blame circumstances so much. If you spend all your earnings or profits on things you do not need you will not have any money for emergencies, and you have to admit to yourself this is partially your fault.
  • Practice self-discipline. In doing so you may need to make a list of your needs and your wants. Be honest about this, as people often think they need far more than they actually do. You need something if you cannot literally live without it, such as food, water, or shelter. Even then do not splurge on the most expensive food all the time.
  • Create a budget. In this weekly, monthly, or yearly spending plan you can set aside a reasonable amount of money to spend on entertainment, clothes, and so on. After that, you should wait until next month.
  • Leave your credit/debit cards at home. The money on your credit cards should really be reserved for emergencies or durable purchases. It should not be used for restocking your wardrobe or buying expensive jewelry or other frivolous items. If you have a debit card leave it at home and just carry as much cash as you need to make planned purchases.

An Extra Tip

In order to get more of the items you want you could find them at cheaper stores. You would be surprised how much extra you may pay for merchandise or services that you could acquire for far less money.
