How To Eliminate The Odor Caused By Dead Rodents

By Subodh / May 8, 2013

You had tried the rat control tips you have found online, and it worked. You don’t know whether to be ecstatic about it or be horrified. The good news is that you have successfully eliminated pesky rats from your property, but the bad news is, you are now suffering from the repelling odor of dead rats.

The bad odor is a combination of methane, benzene derivatives, sulfur dioxide, and long chain hydrocarbons which are produced by the decomposing body. The smell of death is hard to describe, and this always invokes a gut-wrenching reaction- and it should. The decaying rat corpse is a biohazard because it can attract maggots and it breeds bacteria which can cause fatal diseases.

The most obvious solution to eliminate odor from dead rats and to avoid health problems due to their decomposing bodies is to find and remove the dead rat. The area must be disinfected, deodorized, and ventilated.

Find The Source Of The Foul Odor

The first thing you need to do is to find the dead rat and then remove it from the area. Obviously, you will need to use your nose to locate the dead animal. You might also observe if there are flies in the room as they may lead you to the right spot. Maggots are also a good indicator that a rotting animal corpse is laying around somewhere.

Once you find the corpse, you should remove it. Remember to use gloves when you place the carcass into a plastic bag and seal it tightly. After doing so, throw it in the garbage. If you found the carcass but it can’t be removed, try drilling a small hole through the wall at least a foot above the floor then pour or inject any of the following:

  • Disinfectant
  • Odor neutralizer
  • Any type of masking solution
  • Vinegar
  • Bleach

Remember to reseal the opening you have made using a hole filler or steel wool. You must also seal any cracks or holes that might allow the foul smell to escape. After sealing the cracks, you must then ventilate the area using a fan since this can draw fresh area into the area.

You can also consider calling a professional exterminator since they are more trained in removing dead animal bodies from areas that are hard to reach. They have the proper tools and they know the safety guidelines involved in removing dead animals from hard-to-reach places.

Different Methods To Eliminate Odor

There are various ways to get rid of the foul odor. This includes:

  • Using air cleaner with an absorbent filter
  • Using odor neutralizer
  • Adding a new scent that can temporarily cover-up the foul smell

Air Cleaners: These usually come with an absorbent filter, such as charcoal or silica gel. When the air circulates through the filter, it will soak up and eliminate particles.

Odor Neutralizer: This solution usually has bacteria or enzyme that breaks down the organic compound that causes the foul smell. There are some odor neutralizers that contain ionic minerals that can effectively counteract bad smells. This solution is available in powder, granules, or spray.

Masking Deodorants: These are highly concentrated fragrances that temporarily mask the bad smell. They don’t neutralize it or eliminate it. These deodorants are available in granules, mist sprays, or aerosols. Remember to use this solution carefully as there may be certain offensive odors.

These are just a few of the methods available to eliminate bad smell brought about by the dead body of a rat. It is best to address this concern immediately to avoid suffering from the bad smell and to avoid potential health problems.
