If you were to consider all the different phobias, you could say that the fear of death is at the root of them all. Overcoming fears is not something that can be accomplished in a day, many you will never truly be rid of. In order to relieve some of the panic, you need to consider why you are afraid. There are a few things to think about when you have an abnormal fear of dying, you may be able to alleviate the fear if you take control of your life and set things in order.
You do not have to be avidly practicing any religion to be afraid of what is going to happen to your soul after death. In fact most truly religious people are not afraid, they know they will be going to a better place. If, in the deep recess of your mind, you are afraid you have not been a “good enough” person and will spend eternity in some of “hell,” you can get over your fear by doing whatever it is you need to do to make things right with you maker. This will take some true, honest thinking about yourself but if you do this, you will have a huge sense of relief and be able to enjoy your life much better.
Family and Responsibilities
It is quite common for a person to be worried about what will happen to their family if they are not around to take care of them. This could be worry over making sure your children grow into good people or panicking about how they will manage financially without your income. If finances are your worry, you can make sure they are able to continue with the lifestyle they have become accustomed to by purchasing a life insurance policy. Sit down with a financial planner and determine how much your policy should be worth and then contact an insurance agent. Knowing your spouse and children will have a roof over their heads, food to eat and the things in life they need to stay happy and healthy will give you peace of mind. Making sure there is someone who will raise your children in the manner you would, to teach them about life and how to be a good person is another matter. Hopefully the other parent is able to fill this job, if not, turn to respected family members and have the arrangements set up and legal so there is no trouble if you should die prematurely.
Taking Back the Control
Once you determine what it is that has you so terrified of death it is easier to decide on a course of action to take back the control and continue on with your life. If you cannot find a reason for your fear, you need to acknowledge that fact and release it. Sometimes it takes nothing more than accepting the fear and still going on with your life to allow you to release it. There will still be times when you are fearful and you may not be ready to take unnecessary risks that could put your life in danger, but you will be able to tell yourself you are afraid and that it is alright to be so.
There is no magic pill to take when it comes to fears. You have to grasp them and accept them. Acceptance is a way of taking control. When you can do that, the fear will not be as strong and you will be able to put it aside. Do that enough and you will be able to laugh at it and make it go away entirely.
