How to Get Rid of Loneliness

Feeling lonely is not a pleasant feeling but it does serve a purpose. It helps you realize that you need people in your life, but you may want to learn how to get rid of loneliness that turns into depression.

Triggers of Loneliness

You could be doing fine but certain triggers are set off reminding you sometimes that you are alone. For instance, maybe you just went out with a group of friends who all have a significant other or mate.

Either that or maybe your favorite holiday is passed, or maybe it is a day that reminds you of your past lover. Sometimes occasional loneliness turns into prolonged emptiness if you do not seek out companionship.

No need to be Lonely!

It is only natural to feel lonely once in awhile. Even married people are lonely if they do not spend enough times with their mates. However, it seems that loneliness often attacks singles more than marrieds.

No matter what your current relationship status is there are ways to get rid of loneliness:

  • Take up a new interest or hobby. Either that or if there is a craft project, musical opportunity, or sporting activity you have been procrastinating involvement in, take action now.

Doing something creative will help you keep your mind off being alone. Besides, you could join groups that are recruiting new members for a particular recreation or creative activity. This is a great way to meet new people.

  • Volunteer in your community. You will feel useful as you give back to your local neighborhood, church, or school. You could also help out a relative who may be disabled. This special purpose will help you forget that you are single at least most of the time and it helps you feel like you are making a difference.
  • Attend organized social events. Perhaps a local single’s group is planning an outing to go swimming or dancing. There are many kinds of group activities that are open to singles and they are even planned by singles with singles in mind. The excellent part about this is you have the chance to practice talking to people in non-threatening situations.
  • Get a pet. You would be surprised at how good of a companion a house pet can be. Dogs are a little bit more apt to warm up to people versus cats, as cats are a bit more independent.

However, no matter what animal you want in your home (and it could be another such as a gerbil or fish) you taking care of the pet will give you purpose. Plus, you have built-in companionship with a creature who will not (and cannot) judge you or take advantage of you.

Besides, having a pet will in some way connect you with other pet owners. For instance, dog lovers often take their animals for a walk or they visit dog parks.

Coping with Grief

If you are not yet ready to find a way to get rid of loneliness do not be too hard on yourself. The grieving of a loss of a relationship takes time, and the amount of time it takes is different for everyone.

Just take your time and perhaps journal about your sadness, depression, anxiety and so on. Then, when you are ready to face the world you will do so on your own time. However, just do not take too long to face the world or the isolation could literally take your life.
