There are many different things that could be the possible cause of constipation. Regardless of what the cause is, it is a very uncomfortable condition that many people endure. While the elderly seem to experience this condition more often because of their age, constipation can happen to anyone. There are many things that you can do to avoid this condition. All you need to do is to get rid of constipation is follow a few simple tips.

  • Drink Plenty of Fluids. You should be sure to drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Constipation is often caused by dehydration. If you suffer from this digestive tract problem, try to consume more clear liquids. Constipation is also caused by the hardening of the stool because folks do not chew their food properly. You can also be sure that you chew up your food completely before you swallow to avoid constipation.
  • Consume A Lot of Fiber. Make sure that fiber is included in your diet everyday. Vegetables and bran contain a lot of fiber. Eating fiber can help make things run more smoothly. You can find bran in a lot of cereals, wheat breads, and beans. Eating these foods more often will not only be good for your body overall, they will be good for your digestive tract. Eating a lot of green vegetables can also give you a lot of the fiber that you need. Eating greens like lettuce, green peppers, or sometimes vegetables like corn or potatoes can give you the boost of fiber that you need to get things going. Look to see how many grams of fiber are in your purchases at the grocery store and pick out foods high in fiber.
  • Work Out. Be sure to get as much exercise as you can. Instead of taking the elevator, opt to use the stairs instead. Making small changes in your life like that can help improve not only your digestive health, but your overall health. Working out three times a week for a period of twenty minutes or more can help you spend less time worrying about constipation and more time doing the things you love.
  • Purchase Over The Counter Laxatives. Try to use over the counter laxatives to help things run more smoothly. You can purchase pills, powders, or even chocolate laxatives. The choice is yours. You can also try to purchase stool softeners as well. Both of these over the counter medications will make it easier for you to go. Be careful not to take too many of the laxatives.

There are some serious problems that can occur if you let your constipation go untreated. One of those problems can include hemorrhoids. These are uncomfortable and painful problems caused by the straining of the muscles often associated with constipation. Hemorrhoids make it difficult to sit down for long periods of time and can prove to be all around uncomfortable and painful. Hemorrhoids are enlarged or swollen blood vessels in the anal region.
