A couple of decades back the question was: to exercise or not to exercise. Now it is different. It is a given that one needs exercise, the question is, how much. There are number of factors which determine how often you should exercise. There is no one rule that is applicable to all the people. How Much Should I Exercise?
When we talk about quantity, there are two things we are looking at. First is the frequency of the exercises and the second is the duration. As far as the frequency is concerned, it is advisable that you workout at least three to four times in a week. Your body needs to get used to the exercises. If there are bigger gaps between two exercises then your body will not even be able to register that you are working out. So make sure you are working out enough number of times in a week.
The length of time you should workout depends upon what you want to achieve. However, for the beginner it should be at least 30 minutes every day (4 times a week). This is at the very basic level and it will not make much difference to your fitness level. However, the beginner must increase the duration gradually and not instantly. After regular workout of 30 minutes every day, you should increase the duration, to say 1 hour, after about a month or two. If you are not used to working-out then your body will need some time to get used to your new physical regime.
What Is Your Purpose?
How many times you should exercise and for how long depends mostly on your purpose. What are you looking to achieve? If you are looking at the basic level of fitness and you just want to increase your stamina then one hour of exercise everyday and four times in a week is good enough. In this case you will not get into heavy exercises. Your workout will be limited to cardiovascular activities such as running, jogging, cycling and aerobics.
If you are looking to build your body and gain the muscle mass then there is a completely different regime you will need to follow. Not only will you need to increase the frequency of the exercise, you will also need to increase the duration. Get ready to workout at least 5 times in a week and for nothing less than 2-3 hours every day. The types of exercises you will do will also be different. For instance, you will get involved in heavy exercises to build the body mass.

If you are someone who is looking for general fitness then mild exercises are good enough for you. However, to get the best results out of your exercise regime you will also need to follow the right diet regime. You will need to follow the right diet plan to make sure that the workout results are optimized.
