If your throat has ever tightened and you have difficulty swallowing you might have goiter (goitre). This is a condition that affects the thyroid gland, and often results in the swelling of the neck. You might want to get rid of goiters for both health and aesthetic reasons.
Goiter Causes and Symptoms
Symptoms of goiter include tight feeling of the throat, coughing, difficulty breathing, and trouble with swallowing. Neck swelling, as mentioned above, is also a very clear sign of goiter. To be sure you are diagnosed correctly you should see a doctor.
Goiters appear for one of several reasons, included iodine deficiency and autoimmune thyroid disease. Other disease such as hyperthyroidism and/or a thyroid cyst may be the reason you are now experiencing goiter. Puberty or pregnancy and certain foods (i.e. Turnips) could cause goiter to develop.
Here are steps towards your effort to get rid of goiters:
- Go see a doctor, just to be safe – Sometimes goiters go away on their own. However, you are advised to still see a doctor to make sure it is not the result of a more serious health problem. You can wait a little while to see if it goes away, but if it persists and if it is painful you should get it checked out.
- See about medicinal treatment – While you are undergoing a doctor’s checkup you should see about getting medicinal treatment. The right solution administered safely by a doctor could possibly be the answer. The secret to finding a medicine that is safe and effective would be to be honest about your current symptoms as well as your health history. You should also alert your doctor of any medications or supplements you are currently on.
- If necessary, seek surgical treatment – Oftentimes surgical treatments are not necessary. However, if the case of goiter is so severe that it disrupts normal bodily functions surgery may be necessary. This procedure has in fact help many goiter patients who have suffered cancer

Dandelion is another substance you can use to help clear goiter, especially neck swelling. All you need to do is warm up some dandelion leaves for awhile and then smear this substance over the swollen area. You could use a bandage to hold the dandelions on the affected area.
Other ingredients you might want to use to make a goiter treatment solution or paste include flax seed ground in water, swamp cabbage made into a juice, or barley water. You could try any number of home solutions, but stay with the ones your doctor would most recommend.
Not all goiters are a cause for concern. In fact, sometimes this problem is very minor and all you need to do is let the swelling go down. Usually this works in the event the goiter is very small and is not at all painful.
The medications, surgery, and other treatments would not be necessary unless your doctor says one of these types of treatments is necessary. If you notice the ailment has passed after a few days, you may not need to do anything. However, if you are nervous about the possibility of it becoming more severe you may want to seek medical attention.
