How To Get Rid of Muscle Cramps

Contractions of muscles can cause painful sensations, called cramps. While they are not acute pain they can still cause uncomfortable feeling. Cramps are most common in legs and ankles, but they can also occur in shoulder, stomach or back. Children can experience cramps at times, adults can have it too, but cramps are most common in old age.

Among the causes of cramps are:

  • Cold temperatures: The cold contracts the body muscles and thus, a person gets cramps.
  • Humid climate: Too much of humidity in the air also can also cause cramps, especially in the legs and ankles
  • Illness: Certain illnesses cause cramps. Consulting a doctor would help you get rid of it.
  • Food poisoning: Food poisoning can cause stomach cramps.
  • Menstrual cramps: A lot of women get menstrual cramps during their monthly cycles.

There are a number of ways by which you can ease your muscle cramps:

  • Potassium and sodium: Enrich your diet with food with high potassium and sodium content: Lack of potassium and sodium will give you relief from cramps. Banana is a fruit that is rich in potassium. For sodium you can have pickle or pickle juice.
  • Drink lots of water: Rehydration also solves the problem of cramps. The more fluid you have, your chances to get cramps will also go down.
  • Chamomile and peppermint tea: For stomach cramps chamomile and peppermint tea is a good reliever. Regular intake of chamomile and peppermint tea will also alleviate your problems of cramps
  • Hot water bath: Hot water bath is also a great way to relieve cramps. They soothe the muscles and reduce the pain. Women may also get relief from menstrual cramps by having a good hot water bath
  • Red wine: Have some red wine if you are having cramps. While many people might not know, it is good for soothing cramps.
  • Apply hot pads on the area: Applying hot pads on the sore area will help in relaxing the muscle contractions and ease the pain gradually
  • Cranberry juice: Try sipping cranberry juice to reduce cramps.
  • Exercise: Get some exercise for calf muscles in case of leg cramps. Go slow and do not tend to hurry.
  • Massage the area: Massaging the area with lobelia extract will be of some help
  • Comfrey tea and alfalfa: Comfrey tea and alfalfa will eliminate cramps too.
