How To De-Clutter Your Home

While some people may be using the Marie Kondo method and taking de-cluttering to the extreme, there are those who simply need to get rid of some items to either make room for newer things or to simply get more organized. No matter the reason for you deciding to go through your home, here are the steps you need to follow in order to de-clutter your home.

De-clutter one room at a time

When it comes to removing clutter from your home, you’ll create an even bigger mess if you decide to do too much at one time. This is why it’s more important for you to stick to de-cluttering one room at time. Pick the first room you want to tackle and then start going through everything in that room, including closets and other storage spaces in that room. By doing this, you will feel accomplished when you successfully organizing one space before moving onto another. Plus, it lets you keep the de-cluttering contained to one room instead of spreading into all areas of your home.

Give yourself three options

When it comes to successfully de-cluttering your home, you should only give yourself three options: keep, donate, or purge. Have three bins with you when you start to clean out the rooms and put everything in one of those three bins. This way, you’ll know exactly what needs to stay in the room when you’re done, what is going away to charity to be used again by someone else, and what needs to go straight out to the garbage. By forcing yourself to think of everything in these three categories, you’ll have an easier time deciding how exactly to get organized.

Consider storage space

Just because you want to keep something doesn’t mean you need to see it or use it every day. If you have items that have sentimental value but you don’t need to use them all the time, you should consider storage space. This allows you to have a variety of items without having to find a place for them inside your home. According to Livible, “Storage facilities are the best option for giving you more space for your belongings, and since many can be climate controlled or rented for a specific period of time, customers can ensure their belongings will be kept intact.” 

Try the three-month method

When organizing, you’ll likely come across some items that you’re not sure if you want to keep or donate. When this happens, it’s a good idea to turn to the three-month method. Put these items in a specific bin or bag and put it in a safe place in your home. If after three months you have not looked for that item, then you know it’s safe for you to donate it. You can even opt to extend this method to six months or even a year, but don’t let it go any further than that or you’ll just have more to de-clutter eventually.

Give everything a place

We all end up with junk drawers and junk closets when we don’t keep everything organized, and the only way to do that is to ensure everything has a space. Find a space for everything in your home you want to keep, no matter what it is or what it’s used for. Keeping all outdoor-related items together somewhere is a good idea, as well as keeping all bathroom necessities together, kitchen necessities together, etc. By doing this, you not only know where to find something when you need it, but you also know where something should be put back when you’re done with it.

Teach everyone else

If you share living space with a roommate or your family, the final step is to teach them all about your organization. This means teaching them where everything goes so the house can remain organized. Maybe set up a specific place to put mail, a specific place for backpacks, bags or purses, etc. and ensure everyone knows about all these places. When everyone in your home is on the same page as to how to be organized, you can rest assured your home will stay less cluttered for longer periods of time, giving you more peace of mind.

Being organized and de-cluttering your house is something you’ll have to work on, but you’ll certainly enjoy the end result when it’s all said and done. As long as you stay on top of your organization, you’ll find you have to de-clutter less often.
