How To Get Rid of Fire Ants

Fire ants can be a big nuisance especially at those times when they thrive and they don’t seem to leave you alone. Walking out into the garden can become a hassle when trying to avoid these creatures because they easily find and bite your feet, leaving them painful, itchy as well as the bumps to prove their presence. There are many ways to try to get rid of them but here are some of the best.

First Line: Broadcast Baiting

When trying to control fire ants, broadcast baiting such as MaxForce is the first thing that you should try. The ingredient to be looked for is Hydramethylnon and the baiting should contain a form of fire ant killer. All you have to do is place the granules around the mounds where the fire ants are, in the afternoon or early evening, once or twice a season but not before it rains.

Attempt to Drench

Drenching the mounds of the fire ants should be done after the broadcast baiting. This is when you take hot or boiling water and you pour it on the mounds. This drenching is advised to be completed for between three to six weeks to have the desired effect and a few gallons of water are required each time. You can add a fire ant dust insecticide to the process or even a liquid drenching solution.

Use Bait Products

Fire ants do get indoors in which case indoor bait is required. For this case you can use MaxForce and other types of baits for these creatures. If you choose to use these products, make sure that you keep your children and your pets away from them. Read the label of any product that you buy to ensure that they are meant to be used inside the home. You can opt to try Diatomaceous Earth which kills almost half of the ants it comes into contact with. There are various methods to use with this but is highly effective.

Prevention goes a long way with fire ants and there is a lot that you can do to prevent their appearance.

  • Store all of your food in the right types of containers, especially anything sweet.
  • Keep the house clean and get rid of any food that is on the floor.
  • Vacuum and bleach the floor on a consistent basis.
  • Have the doors and windows sealed properly.
  • Repair any cracks or holes in the home.

It is important to get rid of these creatures when they first appear and to take preventative measures against any more appearing. It can make life a lot less hassle and more enjoyable as a result.
