If you suffer from dandruff you are just one of a large amount of people who live with the constant threat of embarrassment because their clothes and hair are full of white flakes. This is not at all pleasant and can reduce self-confidence in a big way. The good news is that the cause of dandruff is not a mystery, so of you can figure out why you have dandruff then you can figure out the best way to get rid of it. Your journey starts here.

Understanding dandruff

All skin has a life cycle so it parts of it are growing and dying all the time. The top layer is a layer called keratinized epithelium, and this is effectively dead skin. It is this layer that flakes off and gives rise to dandruff.

What causes dandruff?

  • Dry scalp: the dryer your scalp is the more likely the dead skin will be to flake of and settle in your hair.
  • Oily scalp: this is somewhat of a more recent theory, but there are links to the oily environment giving rise to organisms that irritate the scalp
  • Psoriasis: this is a skin disease that can affect any part of the body, and it generally leads to plaques with overlying scale. On the scalp it is the characteristic “fly away scale” because when you scrape it, it flies away and can settle in your hair and on your clothes.
  • The environment: what you expose your hair to can often lead to dandruff. This includes the use of cheap hair treatments, using acidic preparations, and styling the hair too much.

Getting rid of dandruff

  1.  Shampoos: there are various shampoos dedicated to getting rid of dandruff. Different preparations have different modes of action, but generally they promote shedding of excess dead skin, fighting irritating organisms, and treating the underlying skin condition. The trick is that you have to use them regularly.
  2. A healthy diet: one of the easiest ways to get rid of dandruff is to watch what you take in. This means drinking much more water so you keep your skin hydrated. Also ensure you get a full complement of vitamins and minerals, especially zinc and vitamin E.
  3. Natural oils: olive oil and tea tree oil have proven successful when used on dry scalps. This ensures that your skin gets what it needs to remain moist and stay rejuvenated.
  4. Balancing the pH: some people will use vinegar if their hair is too alkaline, while others will use a base if it is too acidic. In order to find out which category you fall into it is best to seek professional advice.
  5. Get help: if you have tried everything then it is time to get help. You can do this by going to a salon, the doctor or the pharmacy. They will help you figure out why you are getting dandruff and they will help you get rid of it.
